Hand a ZINK printer to one of your parents and they’ll probably look at you dumbfounded. Hand a Polaroid camera to them, though, and they’ll know instantly what to do with it. Polaroid, a company that killed off one of their core product offerings to make way for the digital revolution, is finally back with a device that mimics the original form factor of the Polaroid camera yet marries the printer tech of today.

The Polaroid Z340 Instant Digital Camera works like a standard 14 megapixel digital point and shoot camera, allowing you to view photos instantly on the 2.7-inch screen as well as make small edits. Photos can be downloaded to a computer from its SD card or you can print them instantly using the device’s built-in printer. The size of the prints, 3×4″, are the same exact size as the first Polaroid camera, which means those with a taste for nostalgia, or perhaps even an aversion to new tech, will instantly understand the offering of this digital camera.

The printer, unlike Polaroid’s original camera, uses a tech called <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2008/03/polaroids-zink-printer-in-action-video.html"title="Polaroid’s ZINK Printer In Action (video)" >ZINK – it stands for Zero Ink. In other words, no ink is used to process the image, and instead depends on an advanced composite material with cyan, yellow, and magenta dye crystals embedded inside. Heat those crystals and an image appears that will last for time to come thanks to a smudge proof tech and a water resistant coating.

While the Polaroid Z340′s form factor is anything but that of today’s traditional point and shoot digital cameras, it weighs about 1.5 lbs and can capture up to 75 photos and print 25 images on a single battery charge.

It’s goes on sale today for $299.99 at Polaroid’s website and other major retailers such as Amazon. Also, keep in mind 30 sheets of ZINK paper costs $20.

A printer with a tablet built into it. A removable 7″ tablet running Android with the Android Marketplace. It’s the stuff that dreams are made of.

HP’s Photosmart eStation is probably the most perfect design for a printer ever. Not because it prints well, or because the hardware is intrinsically different from other printers. It’s made for the modern family, with functionality spanning far and above the call of a simple printer/fax/scanner/copier. This printer can surf the web, play games, read news and watch movies. And it’s all completely wireless. Because it’s completely wireless, there’s nowhere to plug in a fax modem…so all buyers get free online faxing…though after reading the fine print, it’s only 20 faxes inbound and outbound (40 total, but separately) before users have to pay for an online fax service.

Take it on a trip if you like…but don’t expect to print direct. You’ll still need to email the documents to print directly to he printer.

The eStation is built wonderfully, and with an Android Tablet built in and removable (with 4-6 hours of battery life under heavy use, according to one HP spokesperson), the price is expected to be astronomical. Samsung’s Galaxy Tablet is going for, at it’s cheapest on T-Mobile and Sprint, $400 with a 2-year contract. The eStation is the exact same price, $399 with a tablet.

And considering that the printer is no lightweight either with 32 pages per minute in color, scanning up to 1200×2400, Wi-Fi (only, no Ethernet port but USB printing is possible) b/g/n and copies up to 1200dpi. That, and from the same Wi-Fi network anyone can print directly from the tablet, which acts as a pseudo-remote/tablet. Print up webpages directly from the tablet, control how the printer operates from your living room, whatever you want. Simply, it’s genius. I can’t wait to see how it pans out.

The HP Photosmart eStation is available now, with an online deal of $350.

Abusing the all-in-one printer/scanner/copier is one of the best parts of an office job. Stick your face on it! Do other lewd acts! Well, it looks like those days are over. Canon has invented a new security device that requires workers to do fingerprint scans every time they want to use the device. Which means you can’t print 1,000 pages and walk away, and you can’t scan your body parts and get away with it anymore. Canon’s imageRUNNER ADVANCE line will be getting the upgrade. They’ll be available in offices July 8th for about $1,460.

Nowadays, saving energy is quickly becoming common sense as opposed to forward thinking. More and more tech consumers are aware of vampire power and and there are plenty of products out there to combat this unnecessary use of energy.

Having recently been introduced to the TrickleStar products, I have found them to be easy to use as well as being relatively easy on the wallet. What I can say right away is that you are not going to see a noticeable difference in your electric bill. Not unless you are using a ton of them. You’d really have to have your whole residence outfitted in order to see your bill go down.

Now that’s not to say that every little bit doesn’t count for something. I’m sure it does work to prevent vampire power, you just have to have faith and believe in the product. To help with that faith, the TrickleStar PC Energy Saver and Switch look very consumer friendly using a brilliant white glossy plastic and an attractive logo.

To explain what the TrickleStar PC Energy Saver and switch does is quite basic. It limits the amount of stand-by power your computer and peripherals draw from the wall outlet when not in use. When you power down or put to sleep your Mac or PC, the energy saver is activated. Without the switch, the energy saver is automatically set into use upon shut-down, whereas you have manual control when you have the switch integrated with in the set-up. I really have no idea why this wasn’t one product, but I’ll save that for gripe time.

The set-up process is really easy as well. All you do is plug the energy saver into the wall and then plug the power strip containing your PC/Mac and all its peripherals (Scanner, Printer, USB Hubs) into the female end. From there you plug the USB end into any port that reaches your computer. The switch is the middle man between you computer and the energy saver and uses female and male USB plugs to make that connections. Super easy.

I have a MacBook laptop so I am often using my computer away from my hard drives, USB hubs, and iPhone dock. The TrickleStar PC Energy Saver and Switch worked perfect for this. All I had to do was flip the switch and my whole surge protector and hard drives were shut down. The switch itself denotes power through a bright green LED. For more permanent set-ups, the Energy Save plug is mountable and the Switch has a peel adhesive.

Simple as that, my only problem with these products is that they are not one product. There’s really no need for this and it is much more practical to power your gear down manually, especially when using several chained hard drives.

Beyond that, the TrickleStar products work as advertised and will cost under $30 for the pair. If you are looking for a way to assure yourself that your computer set-up is not wasting energy I strongly suggest you give these products a try.

Pros:

Easy Set-Up

Attractive Aesthetic

Saves Energy

Cons:

Products should be combined as one package

No real way to prove it works without the help of MythBusters

I now present to you the touchscreen printer. It’s best described as a <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2008/12/bmw-worlds-first-car-company-to-offer-microsoft-surface.html"title="microsoft surface" target="_blank">Microsoft Surface with a printer built-in. Just place the camera on the printer’s touchscreen and the photos are wirelessly downloaded. The touchscreen allows for editing and modifying of the photos, such as cropping or color changing. When finished, hit print and out of the side emerges the photo. It’s not clear why the printer features a foldable design, but it might be safe to assume it expands the touchscreen surface area or allows for scanning.

Not that 3D printing will show up in your house anytime soon, but the folks at Mcor Technologies are making it a closer reality than ever before. Their Matrix 3D printer uses regular old A4 paper to build, yes, 3D objects. It works by gluing the pieces of paper together to form what looks like a relatively sturdy object.

Makes sense, since it’s probably far cheaper (cost per cubic centimeter is $0.0144) than <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2008/10/3d-printing-gets-real-with-the-alaris-30-desktop-3d-printer.html"title="Alaris 30 Desktop 3D Printer" >other 3D printers we’ve seen. But I’d wager a bet that they’re at the top of sone environmentalist’s ‘watch list’.

The Matrix 3D printer will be available in the US Q1 of 2009. More info here

Don’t expect to cruise down to your local Staples and pick up this printer any time soon. The Alaris 30 Desktop 3D printer requires a CAD file and a $40,000 bank roll. But once you’ve dragged the 180lb printer back to the office you’ll be knocking out detailed 3D models.

Although both of Canon’s latest printers are almost identical, the ES3 takes the big brother label by sporting 1gig of on board memory for storing photos, additional clip art and photo frames and a larger LCD. They both feature a 15-in-1 memory card reader, a 3.5-inch LCD for previewing photos (3.0-inches for the ES30), are PictBridge compatible (this allows you to connect a camera and print from it), and use Canon ink and paper cartridges.

I guess they’re available now (Amazon has them) and will go for $200 for the ES3, and $150 for the ES30. I don’t see the appeal, but they do look oh so Euro. Plus the cartridges probably cost an arm and a leg.

The biggest scam in home computing has to be the printing. Sure printers are cheap, but you’ll fork over your kid’s college fund to print the family album. Plus, it’s a total pain to manage since half the ink cartridges get clogged and don’t last that long. ZINK technology, or Zero Ink technology, removes the ink and bundles it in a piece of paper. No word on cost just yet (probably not cheap, though), but Polaroids got a mobile printer using the technology. Here’s how it works:

ZINK Paper™ is at the heart of ZINK™ Zero Ink™ Technology. ZINK Paper is an advanced composite material with cyan, yellow, and magenta dye crystals embedded inside and a protective polymer overcoat layer outside, enabling true ink-free prints. Before printing, the embedded dye crystals are colorless, so ZINK Paper looks like regular white photo paper. A ZINK-enabled device uses heat to activate and colorize these dye crystals. These crystals, named Amorphochromic™ crystals, represent an entirely new class of molecules, invented by ZINK Scientists through a rigorous discovery process. The properties of each dye crystal were finely tuned to achieve the color palette and image stability required for beautiful, full-color digital prints. ZINK™ scientists also invented a way to activate each of the crystals independently using heat pulses of precisely determined duration and temperature to achieve any color under the rainbow. The printing process is now radically simple.
