Pull a gnarly trick on the slopes and you’ll probably regret not having a camera running to record your performance. That’s where Liquid Image steps in, who has been producing goggles for all types of terrain, even Scuba diving and snorkeling, for sometime now. At CES 2012 the company added their product line up and introduced Apex HD snow goggles, which boast built-in WiFi and a full HD camera.

Now, to be clear we’ve seen the same camera on their Impact Series cameras. It’s capable of capturing full HD video at 30 fps, 720p video at 60fps for those who don’t want to miss a frame of action as well as a 12-megapixel shooter. Now, from what we’ve understood, before this iteration, controlling the built-in camera required skiers to fumble around with a set of buttons directly on the mask. Hardly ideal when you’re all suited up and ready to go.

As a result, Liquid Image has now outfitted their goggles with built-in WiFi, allowing you to administer settings as well as obtain a live preview of the camera directly on your smartphone. Alternatively, a fellow skier could follow and change the settings, increasing the frame rate or activating the continuous still shooting mode. For those without a compatible smartphone there will also be an available remote, though no preview from our understanding. Last, but not least, the camera’s angle will be adjustable by tightening and loosening a hidden screw in the frame of the mask. Like previous Liquid Image masks, video and photos are recorded to a microSD card slot and can be uploaded via a USB connection to a computer at a later time.

The APEX HD will be available October, though another version, not designed for the slopes will arrive June. Expect them to start at about $300.

Achieving the perfect shot takes more than a good camera. You’ll not only need an abundance of raw talent, but an apparatus or two to accomplish this. You could always opt for an expensive tripod or steadicam, but that’ll put you in the hole before you complete and sell your first vignette; they often cost at least a few hundred dollars.

The Cam Caddie Video Stabilizer effectively converts any DLSR into a professional grade camcorder. It utilizes the weight of the camera to stabilize shots, reducing if not removing shakes and jolts without the usual myriad of counter weights and complicated adjusters. The curved handled is designed to mimic that of a scropion and leaves enough room (6-inches of space) for even the most obtuses lenses. And Mounting it is as simple as screwing a standard tripod thumb screw.

Our friends at Photojojo sell it for $39.99.

As the world’s first built-in WiFi action cam, gobandit’s LIVE device allows adrenaline addicts to view, edit and share their videos on social networks like Facebook and YouTube with their smartphone instantly. All your greatest adventures will be captured in full 1080p HD action with the innovative action cam that can record from your helmet, bike or car (to name a few). There’s also a full range of accessories for the LIVE action cam for practically every sport.

LIVE also has the ability to sense your surrounding, record your position, latitude, longitude, acceleration and speed through the cutting-edge 170° degree wide-angle rotating optics, 3-Axis Gyro, 3D accelerometer, barometric altitude sensor and lighting-fast GPS receiver with no less than 5Hz refresh rate. There’s a gobandit studio app to complement the LIVE action cam, which allows users to further customize their videos by adding skins and performance data. The LIVE action cam weighs less than one-third-of-a-pound (0.31 pounds) and measures 4.1 x2.4 x1.3-inches (H x W x D) in size, so it’s compact for any adventure. It’ll be available beginning March and will cost $419.

When it comes to head mounted camcorders, the first product we think of is <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2011/10/gopro-hd-hero-2.html"title="GoPro HD Hero 2 (video)" >GoPro. The last? The iPhone. Clearly it’s way too fragile to survive any of the follies that might occur during a downhill snowboarding expedition or while traversing a hill on a mountain bike. That is unless of course you’ve got it encased in the Optrix.

Beyond adding a water resistant layer of protection, they’ve crafted two “sleds” (one for the iPhone and one for the iPod Touch) that reduce shake and vibration. The screen is protected by a .5mm thick membrane that prevents scratches, dirt and water from seeping in, yet still allows you to administer the device. Mounting comes by way of 3m’s industrial adhesives, though we’d like to see some other options for mounting, though the company’s accessories page indicates there will be a handle bar mount as well as a few other options.

Suffice to say, we’re a bit skeptical. We don’t like the idea of putting a $649 device in harm’s way, but if the case can protect the iPhone 4s from just about anything that comes its way, then why not? However, GoPros offering starts at just $300 and includes waterproof, not water resistant housing.

You can buy the Optrix for $80.

We’re still waiting on a consumer level camera that can capture HD footage at high enough frame rate to achieve ultra detailed slow-mo shoots. And while $25,000 is a far from affordable for the general population, it’s probably a fair bit cheaper than that Phantom camera used in Jackass 3D and other Hollywood productions. Nevertheless, that’s the starting cost of Vision Research’s M110, M310, and M120, which as it happens are the same folks that developed the Phantom 3D slow-mo camera.

The Miro M110 and M310 are both a 1-megapixel affair that can capture up to a 1280 x 800 resolution. The lesser of the two, the M110, can achieve a 1600 fps at full resolution, while the M310 can achieve a 3200 fps. If you’re willing to sacrifice quality in favor of frames per second, they can achieve 400,000fps and 600,00 fps respectively.

For those looking for a full HD experience, they won’t have to look any further than the 2-megapixel M120, which can achieve 730 fps when recording at 1920×1200, 800 fps at 1920×1080 or 1200 fps at 1152×1152. And like the two other models its speed can be increased to 200,000 fps, with of course the caveat of reduced resolution.

Strangely enough, these cameras are only available in 3GB, 6GB, or 12GB memory configurations. However, they are compact, rugged and apparently operate in low light scenarios.

Expect Vision Research’s newest cameras to ship mid-January.

Video bloggers, otherwise known as Vloggers, has long been a solo job. Unless of course your Vlog garners hundreds of thousands of views, then you can probably afford a production team, or at the very least a friend to hold the camera. For those of you lacking Internet fame, you’ll be pleased to hear that the <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2011/01/satariis-star-iphone-dock-suggests-the-future-of-teleconferencing.html"title="Satarri Star" >Satarii Star has now been fully funded and with it a much more marketable name; Swivl.

If you recall, this device is a mount for your iPhone, Android device or camcorder and can follow you as you walk left to right ensuring that you’re never out of the camera’s field of view. In this version, though, they’ve also added the ability for the device to tilt, so presumably you can now jump and go prone without losing a shot. It works by affixing a small tracking beacon to your pants, which enables the base unit to know where you’re standing.

As of today the Swivl is available for preorder, though the company is saying that demand is outpacing production, so if you want one sooner than later we suggest you throw down the $160 asking price. Expect it to hit retail stores, or at the very least your door step sometime in early 2012 and an early unveiling as this upcoming CES.

Ready to take on the film industry? Then you’ll probably want one of these: the Canon C300 Cinema camera. The price tag isn’t for the faint of heart as it costs about $20,000. And keep dreaming if you think that includes a lens. Nevertheless, it’s an ultrapowerful camera and all things relative it really is an affordable solution for any aspiring auteur who wants to produce a professional work of moving pictures.

Yes, it achieves full HD video, but that’s just for starters. Behind the lens is a Super 35mm CMOS sensor that can deliver up to 4K resolution. That means it won’t look all grainy when your feature film hits your local cinema or that overly large big screen. A variety of lens mount options are at your disposable, but by default it will only include one.

In terms of size the Canon C300 measures 5.2 (w) x 7.0 (h) x 6.7 (d) inches, so it’s nimble, especially when positioned against other Hollywood cinema cameras. Add Canon’s WFT-E6B wireless file transmitter and the C300 can be controlled remotely using just an iPhone or tablet device.

Unfortunately, for adrenaline junkies the frame rate caps at 60fps. So no ultra slow motion, but come on, at $20k did you expect much more?

The Canon C300 can be purchased March 2012.

A Star Is Born: Canon Launches New Digital Cinema Camera For High-Resolution Motion Picture Production

HOLLYWOOD, California, November 3, 2011/TOKYO, November 4, 2011 – Canon Inc. and Canon U.S.A., Inc. today raised the curtain on an all-new interchangeable-lens digital cinema camera that combines exceptional imaging performance with outstanding mobility and expandability to meet the demanding production needs of today’s motion picture industry. The camera, which features a newly developed Super 35 mm-equivalent approximately 8.29-megapixel CMOS sensor, will be available in two models: the EOS C300 Digital Cinema Camera*, equipped with an EF lens mount for compatibility with Canon’s current diverse lineup of interchangeable EF lenses for EOS single-lens reflex (SLR) cameras and new EF Cinema Lens lineup; and the EOS C300 PL Digital Cinema Camera*, with a PL lens mount for use with industry-standard PL lenses.

The introduction of the EOS C300/C300 PL coincides with the launch of the Cinema EOS System, marking Canon’s full-fledged entry into the digital high-resolution production industry. The new professional digital cinematography system spans the lens, digital cinema camera and digital SLR camera product categories.

Star-Studded Supporting Cast
Equipped with an EF lens mount, the EOS C300 is supported by an all-star cast of high-performance EF lenses, not only the wide array of interchangeable EF lenses for EOS SLR cameras that have earned the trust and respect of photographers around the world, but also the EF cinema lenses in the newly announced Cinema EOS System. When outfitted with a Canon EF lens, the C300′s peripheral illumination correction automatically corrects for vignetting in accordance with each lens’s optical characteristics, and enables iris control from the camera. Canon EF lenses also enable the recording of such metadata as the name of the lens used, aperture setting and shutter speed.i

Show-Stopping High-Resolution Full-HD Performance
The Canon EOS C300/C300 PL’s newly developed Super 35 mm-equivalent CMOS sensor incorporates approximately 8.29 million effective pixels and has a pixel size that is larger than that for conventional professional camcorders, enabling greater light-gathering capabilities for enhanced sensitivity and reduced noise. The sensor reads Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) video signals for each of the three RGB primary colors, decreasing the incidence of moiré while realizing high resolution with 1,000 horizontal TV lines.

Supported by a heightened signal read-out speed, the CMOS sensor reduces rolling shutter skews, a phenomenon prevalent with CMOS sensors in which fast-moving subjects may appear diagonally distorted. Additionally, the powerful combination of the sensor with Canon’s high-performance DIGIC DV III image processor facilitates high-precision gamma processing and smooth gradation expression.

In addition to MPEG-2 Full HD (MPEG2 422@HL compliant) compression, the EOS C300/C300 PL employs 4:2:2 color sampling for high-resolution performance that minimizes the appearance of “jaggies” at chroma edges. Additionally, with a maximum recording rate of 50 Mbps, the camera supports the recording of high-quality video.

The camera’s video and audio recording file format adopts the industry-standard MXF (Material eXchange Format), an open source file format ideally suited for non-linear editing systems. Recording to versatile, readily available CF cards, the EOS C300/C300 PL realizes high cost-performance and, equipped with two CF card slots, makes possible the simultaneous recording of video data to two CF cards.

Ready for Action
With a compact body design measuring 5.2 (w) x 7.0 (h) x 6.7 (d) inches, the Canon EOS C300/C300 PL delivers exceptional maneuverability, enabling shooting from vantage points all but inaccessible to large cinema cameras, such as close to the ground for high-impact low-angle shots, and alongside walls. In accordance with on-location shooting needs, the camera can be outfitted with a handle, grip, thumb rest and monitor unit, and offers an array of industry-standard terminals, including HD/SD-SDI video output for the external recording of high-quality video content. When using a WFT-E6B wireless file transmitter for EOS digital SLR cameras (sold separately), the EOS C300/C300 PL can be controlled remotely by means of such common devices as smartphones or tablet PCs.

The camera is equipped with four start/stop buttons positioned at various locations to satisfy any preferred camera-holding style, and can be outfitted with a variety of third-party accessories, including matte boxes, follow focuses and external video and audio recorders. The unit also achieves seamless integration with third-party editing systems and provides added peace of mind through its dust-proof, drip-proof construction and built-in cooling system.

The new camera allows users to adjust image quality to match that of professional camcorders and EOS-series digital SLR cameras, and offers Canon Log Gamma, enabling flat image quality with subdued contrast and sharpness for maximum freedom in post-production editing and processing. In addition to frame rates of 59.41i, 50.00i, 29.97P, 25.00P and 23.98P, the EOS C300/C300 PL features a 24.00p mode, matching the 24 frame-per-second frame rate of film cameras for high compatibility with common film-production workflows.

Other features include fast-motion shooting, achieved by capturing fewer frames per second to create action up to 60x normal speed, and slow-motion down to 1/2.5xii made possible by capturing more frames per second. Frame rates between 1 and 60 frames per second (fps)iii can be adjusted in increments of 1 fps. Additionally, a selection of Custom Pictures lets users freely adjust image quality for greater control over how content looks.

Pricing and availability
The Canon EOS C300 (EF mount) digital cinema camera is scheduled to be available in late January 2012 for an estimated list price of $20,000. The Canon EOS C300 PL (PL mount) digital cinema camera is scheduled to be available in late March 2012 for an estimated list price of $20,000.

Earlier this year Cisco killed the Flip. After all, all it could do was record HD video, and not any better than a smartphone. So it’s relatively safe to assume that category of device is all together extinct, right? Wrong. Today, 3M released the CP45.

This pocket friendly device combines an HD camcorder and a projector in one. It can record up to 720p HD video, 5 megapixel still photos and includes an LED flash for night time shots. Built-in memory caps at 2GB but that can be increased by adding a microSD card slot. In addition to a 2.4-inch LCD screen, it can project an 800×600 image ranging from 10-inch to 65-inches in size on any surface with a brightness of 20 lumens. So it ain’t ultra bright, but should suffice for showing off pics or video, provided of course you’ve got a dark room. Unfortunately, battery life (it’s rechargeable) is rather limited, allowing you to project images up to 100 minutes, which doesn’t account for video recording or photo capturing.

The 3M CP45 is available now for $299. Of note, you can buy Nikon’s S1100 for about $200.

GoPro has unleashed an updated version of their HD Hero camera, the HD Hero 2. In now boast a better lens, an easier to use interface, more ports and compatibility with a new line of GoPro WiFi oriented products.

First and foremost, GoPro has improved the glass, otherwise known as the lens of the camera. It’s now sharper as well as faster, capable of capturing 10 photos in 1 second, compared to the previous HD Hero, which was limited to 3 photos in 1 second. The field of view has also been expanded to 170 degrees and if need be can be narrowed to 127 or 90 degrees. Much like the first HD Hero, the HD Hero can record full HD video, but bests it by achieving a variable frame rate that ranges from 30-120fps, though resolution will be sacrificed as it increases.

GoPro has also updated the LCD screen by adding a more intuitive menu (language based vs code interfaced) system, though it still isn’t touchscreen capable. However, it should simplify and streamline the process of modifying the camera’s features, making it easier to setup up the HD Hero 2 and ensuring that the right shot is captured with the right settings.

The housing, which remains the same in terms of shape, has been updated with a mini-HDMI port, a 3.5mm headphone jack and LED lights on all sides to indicate when the HD Hero 2 is recording. Lastly, the HD Hero 2 is compatible with GoPro’s line of WiFi products, which allow remote video preview, playback, camera control with a smartphone and WiFi remote compatibility.

The GoPro Hero 2 will go on sale this week and start at $299.99.

3D porn movies are no longer relegated to the professionals. Now you and your loved one can experience your Gonzo styled exploits in 3D thanks to DXG’s DXG-5F9V. While we’ll ignore the fact that they’ve placed the brand name directly in the model, we can’t help but oggle the price, which is a mere $299. Pretty darn cheap for a 3D shooter which captures full HD in 3 dimensions.

Alternatively, you can snap 5 megapixel photos or good old fashioned 2D full HD videos. A 3.2-inch displays allows you to review your handy work without those pesky 3D glasses, though you’ll need to run to your local Walmart and pick up an SD card, since this bad boy only ships with 128mb of storage built-in.

Now, it’s not clear if you can switch into 2D mode after recoding in 3D, but it’s most certainly viable since we’ve seen this option in other 3D camcorders and in theory the information already exists. Eitherway, you’ll probably want an HDTV, ideally one that can output a 3D image, since you can jack the DXG-5F9V directly into one using the built-in HDMI port.

Sold? You can by one today directly from DXG.

4 out of 5 stars

Originally designed and engineered to work with an Apple iPhone 3Gs , the Tiffen Steadicam Smoothee has filled the need for stabilizing video shot with mobile smartphones and pocket cameras. The Smoothee’s design is based on the same Steadicam technology used regularly in Hollywood and with handheld video cameras stabilizers like the Steadicam Merlin.

Selling for about $180, the Smoothee helps smartphone and pocket camcorder users improve their results by smoothing out any camera shake where movement takes place while capturing the moment. The Smoothee can be used with the Apple iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (and now, iPhone 4S), the iPod Touch, and the Flip Mino pocket video cameras. Tiffen has also hinted at additional model compatibility planned which will make it advantageous for users of such cameras like the GoPro HD and Android users who would like to have a mobile stabilizer to help smooth out their video clips.

But while Tiffen claims that the Smoothee can be used right out of the box with great results , it requires some set up which may cause new users to feel frustrated with the learning curve. Here’s a few thoughts we have on the Smoothee and how well it works…

Setup

Tiffen says the Smoothee can easily be used to get perfect results “right out of the box and on the go.” But the Smoothee must be balanced and leveled once an iPhone or Flip camera is installed. Thankfully, that’s what the trim knobs on the side and back are for. They perform this function well and there isn’t a shifting of weights to accomplish this balancing act. And every time you switch out cameras for a different model, you will have to re-trim the device.

<a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2011/10/steadicam-smoothee-review-review.html/500_a-1hand_thumb"rel="attachment wp-att-111127" >

Practice Technique

Additionally, the Smoothee does need some practice to refine the technique needed to control it and to prevent the camera from drifting on the gimble. There are at least 3 different ways that you can control the Smoothee – one handed, one handed with the gimble resting between finger and thumb, and two handed. Your mileage may vary as to which will work best, but once you have your technique down, with practice the drift is sure to be a thing of the past. It’s a very good idea to read the manual completely, watch some of the online videos, and then go out and do plenty of practicing before taking the Smoothee on vacation or for a family gathering.

<a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2011/10/steadicam-smoothee-review-review.html/500_3gs"rel="attachment wp-att-111126" >

Additional thoughts

A few thoughts on the custom Smoothee cradles …. it’s obvious that iPhones don’t come with a tripod mount natively, requiring some sort of cradle option to mount it on the Smoothee. And the Smoothee’s cradle works really well. But the custom cradle for the Mino and other compact cameras (which sell for about $25 a piece) strike me as simply an attempt to make users buy more accessories. Cameras that already have a tripod mount could easily benefit from a universal, quick release mount, which is the accepted standard on tripods everywhere. And since today’s point and shoot cameras are rivaling camcorders with quality 1080p video, Tiffen is shortchanging customers by not having a point and shoot option. That’s too bad.

The Steadicam Smoothee is a great mobile device, but it isn’t foldable, making it a challenge to pack when traveling. The ergonomic gimble handle can be stowed into travel position, but that doesn’t make the Smoothee any smaller in the suitcase. And users hoping to push the envelope, and opt for a camcorder or DSLR, will need to spend a bit more and invest in the Steadicam Merlin as the Smoothee simply isn’t designed or balanced for anything outside the mobile arena.

Even with its quirks the Steadicam Smoothee can help video fans take better video by removing any camera shake when trying to capture a moment on the go. And with patient practice, it’s likely that even by pulling it out of the case, a user will be able to get a balanced, steady image, with a quick turn of a knob. But if you’re expecting to get instant results out of the box, you may be in for a frustrating beginning.

Pros:

robust design

balancing trim knobs

works as advertised

Cons:

Proprietary cradles, no universal camera mount

learning curve

a bit pricey ($189)

Final rating: Even though it has some drawbacks, they aren’t deal breakers by any means, so we give the Smoothee a rating of 4/5 stars.

You can buy the Steadicam Smoothee at Amazon for $179.95.

These days, every point and shoot camera can capture half way decent video. However, nothing compares to a stand alone, prosumer level handycam such as Sony’s NEX-VG20. This camcorder is a powerhouse thanks a sensor on steroids and interchangeable lens mount system.

The NEX-VG20 can capture full HD video at up to 24mbps in the AVCHD 2.0 codec, which makes it instantly Blu-ray compatible right out of the camera.

Sony has used the same sensor found in their DSLRs. It’s 19.5 times larger than most camcorders and will allow you to create professional looking videos. But that’s just half the optic battle; you’ll need to invest in a decent piece of “glass”. And by glass we mean lenses.

The NEX-VG20 is compatible with Sony’s E-mount series of smaller, lighter lenses which are optimized for video shooting with silent operation and AF as well as Sony/Minolta A-mount lenses (via optional LA-EA2 A-mount adapter).

Perched just above the lens is a Quad Capsule Spatial array stereo microphone. It’s can create 5.1-channel surround sound, bring your home movies to a whole new level of realism. Baby screams, the wife yelling at you and the BBQ sizzling in the background will now fire from all speakers.

Other features include a 3-inch touchscreen LCD with a 921k dot resolution, full manual control, dual accessory shoe (hot and cold), an auto HDR mode that capture high rez photos at 3 different exposure levels and produce one contrasty photo, 25-point auto focus, HDMI slot, SD card slot and optical steady shot.

The Sony NEX-VG20 interchangeable lens camcorders will be available this November. The body only version, the NEX-VG20, will cost $1,599, where as the version that includes an SEL18200 F3.5-6.3 E-mount lens, the NEX-VG20H, will cost $2,199.

Crashing your jet ski might be a painful experience, but if you’ve got video of your mishap to show off, and perhaps make a few bucks in the process thanks to YouTube views, well, your pain might quickly subside. Capturing all that goodness though, requires a rugged, waterproof HD camera.

The ContourROAM is Contour’s latest HD head mountable video camera. It can capture 1080p, 960p, and 720p video at 30fps, and 5 megapixel still photos. A 170-degree wide angle lens that can be rotated 270-degrees (think angle left, right, up, down) all but guarantees that you’ll catch your tom foolery at its best.

Inside the 5.1oz camera is a laser guide that fires a horizontal line, ensuring that you get the level shot your looking for, especially when you use the included tripod screw mount and the Contour Trail mounting system.

Chances are the ContourROAM will be mounted on your head, out of your field of view, so they’ve added an Instant On-Record Switch that powers on the camera and initiates recording.

When and if you take a dip into the drink, the ContourROAM can survive in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes as well as a variety of other environments thanks to the aluminum body.

The ContourROAM is available now from retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and more for $199.99

Anyone can wander into the woods and capture HD video of their surroundings. But to achieve that Discovery Channel like look you’ll need not only a keen eye for detail, but equipment that allows you to zoom in on some of nature’s most allusive of creatures. While we probably wouldn’t waste our time watching birds flutter around, there is inevitably a market for this kind of stuff and Sony seems to think so too.

Yesterday, the company unveiled the DEV-3 and DEV-5, two binoculars that capture full HD video (and photos) in both 2D and 3D. The higher end DEV-5 boast a 20x optical zoom, while the DEV-3 is limited to just 10x. Switch into 3D video mode and that zoom is chopped in half for each respective model. But that seems to be a worthwhile sacrafice since you can finally use your 3D compatible LCD TV for all its worth.

Both units boast the ability to automatically focus on their subject, and use finally tuned tech to discern between your subject and a tree branch. Much like their digital cameras and camcorders, they’ve packed in their image stabilization, “Exmor R” CMOS sensors with BIONZ image processing, and a macro mode that can focus within a half an inch, though that figure is deminshed to 32-inches when recording in 3D mode. And no bird watching would be complete without a GPS tracking system to log your location, though that feature is only available in the DEV-5 model.

Both models ship this November with a 3 hours rechargeable battery (2D mode only), a USB plug, lens cover, finder cap, large eye cups, a carrying case and neck strap. Cost to you is $1,400 and $2,000 respectively.

SONY INTRODUCES WORLD’S FIRST DIGITAL BINOCULARS WITH HD VIDEO RECORDING, ZOOM, AUTOFOCUS AND STEADYSHOT IMAGE STABILIZATION
Share the Thrill of Discovery, Easy-to-Find, Never Lose the Subject; New Models Enable 2D and 3D Image Capture/Playback with Stunning Resolution, High-performance Features

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 19, 2011 – Life’s “can’t miss” moments are now easier to observe and capture with the world’s first digital binoculars to record in AVCHD™ 2.0 format, from Sony. The new models, DEV-3 and DEV-5, are ideal for nature/bird watching, they can record Full HD video with stereo sound at the touch of a button, and even add a 3D mode that records scenes as thrilling stereoscopic video footage for playback on most 3D HDTVs.
“Now consumers can watch birds, wildlife, sports action and more in steady, sharply-focused close-up views, while capturing their subjects in crisp Full HD,” said Andy Bubala, director of the camcorder business at Sony Electronics. “These new models add entirely new levels of flexibility and convenience to viewing, recording and enjoying your favorite images and scenes.”
Users can select the variable zoom on both models to scan a wide area at low magnification before zooming in seamlessly to pinpoint a subject, such as birds in a field. Turning on the digital zoom at magnification settings over 10x boosts the DEV-5 model’s total magnification range from 0.9x up to 20x digital (image quality is reduced when digital zoom is on and recording 2D video at magnifications higher than 10x), rivalling many high-powered conventional binoculars. The DEV-3 model pulls wildlife, sporting subjects and architectural details closer with a maximum magnification of 10x optical. In 3D mode, the binoculars’ maximum magnification is 5.4x optical.
Unlike traditional binoculars, electronic autofocus keeps moving subjects sharply in focus at all times. A comfortably positioned dial allows fingertip adjustment of manual focus – ideal for focusing selectively on a subject, rather than overhanging branches or other obstructions in the field of view.
Electronic autofocus allows both binoculars to focus cleanly on subjects less than half an inch away when recording in 2D (minimum of 32 inches when recording in 3D).
Separate images for left and right eyes are captured by a matched pair of precision G Lens optics by Sony with “Exmor R” CMOS sensors and powerful BIONZ® processors. Independent electronic viewfinders provide clear, detailed images for left and right eyes, offering a stereoscopic viewing experience that’s comfortable, natural and highly immersive.
The DEV-3 and DEV-5 digital binoculars feature Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization (Active mode), the optical stabilization system that’s found on Sony Handycam® camcorders and Cyber-shot® cameras. Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization helps keep images clear and stable, even when viewing at high magnifications. The binoculars can be connected via HDMI® to a Sony BRAVIA® HDTV or any HD television with HDMI input for viewing images (cable sold separately). 3D videos can be enjoyed on virtually any 3D-compatible TV, including Sony BRAVIA® models. There’s also a USB connection for transferring video clips to a PC for storing, editing and sharing.
The binoculars feature a “stealth” design that eliminates distracting buttons or external details that could reveal a user’s position to wildlife.
Both binoculars feature an ergonomic grip area that’s coated with an elastomer material for sure handling and stable operation. Top-mounted controls allow easy operation with gloved fingers, while dual buttons are provided to start recording instantly with either hand.
The DEV-5 model includes an on-board GPS receiver that automatically geo-tags video clips and photos. Tagged images can be viewed after shooting in online maps (requires compatible software).
Both binocular models come with a high-capacity rechargeable battery pack (NP-FV70) that allows up to approximately three hours of 2D recording on a single charge. Remaining battery time (minutes) is displayed in the electronic viewfinder.
The DEV-3 and DEV-5 models also include a battery charger/adaptor, A/V connecting cable and USB cable for PC connection. In addition, the DEV-5 binoculars are supplied with lens cover, finder cap, large eye cups, a carrying case and neck strap.
The new DEV-3 and DEV-5 digital recordable binoculars from Sony will be available in November 2011 for about $1400 and $2000, respectively, at http://store.sony.com, Sony retail stores and other authorized retailers nationwide. For images and information, please visit www.sony.com/news.

While there a number of options to choose from, the Drift HD looks to be a solid choice. This new version is 25% smaller than it predecessor, meaning it won’t weigh your noggin down and will feel more trim when performing the most absurd of stunts. It captures full HD video and sports a lens that rotates 300 degrees with a 170 degree field of view. The lenses are replaceable and it can also capture 9 megapixel photos. Usually for camcorders of this size the feature set is pretty limited, generally to the aforementioned ones. However, the Drift HD includes a remote control and an LCD screen for adjusting settings.

The Drift HD launches August 31st for $369.

Sony’s HDR-PJ50 handycam has stolen a play out of Nikon’s playbook. To be more specific, it sports a built-in projector directly into the camcorders 3-inch fold out LCD screen, which we first saw a few years ago in <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2009/08/nikon-coolpix-s1000pj-the-worlds-first-digital-camera-with-a-built-in-projector-video.html"title="Nikon Coolpix SJ1000" target="_blank">Nikon’s Coolpix S1000pj. Given the rather small, and probably underpowered nature of the built-in projector, you’ll need an almost pitch black room to achieve a decent contrast ratio, especially if you max out its display size of 60-inches. Under the hood it has a sensor that can capture full HD video and 7.1 megapixel photos. There is also a 12x optical zoom, 220GB hard drive, the ability to capture 5.1-channel surround sound and a Memory Stick slot for expanded storage.

Surprisingly, the HDR-PJ50 is already on sale in Asia for $1,350.

The first <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2010/09/looxcie-bluetooth-video-headset.html"title="Looxcie" target="_blank">Looxcie by all accounts was a revolutionary step in terms of Bluetooth headsets. But the company went back to the drawing board and today announced the next iteration of the device, the Looxcie 2. It’s 20 percent lighter (just 22g) than the first version and almost half the size. They’ve also improved the resolution to 480p, making it much more relevant by today’s video standards, though users can still opt for 320p if they wanna save some space. Two versions will be available, 4GB and 8GB, providing 5 hours and 10 hours of video respectively. Looxcie has also developed a few attachement for those in the extreme sports category, allowing them to attach the device to helmets and other head gear. Expect battery life to cap out at 4 hours – we’re not sure on standby time.

In case you forgot the Looxcie is on of the first Bluetooth headsets which allows users to record video while simultaneously connecting to a smartphone for telephone calls. The first iteration of the device recorded on a 30 second loop until the user hit a ‘save’ button, where upon the video could be sent to a phone for distribution. It’s not clear if this version will have a bigger loop, but here’s hoping that you can customize it.

The Looxcie 2 is available now for $199.99 and 179.99. If you like them on Facebook you’ll save an additional $20.

The <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2011/04/flip-camcorders-are-dead-long-live-the-smartphone.html"title="Flip Death" target="_blank">Flip may have died, but that hasn’t stopped additional contenders in the space from emerging.

Today, Olympus announced the LS-20M. At a glance it’s your typical pocket friendly camcorder. It’s replete with a 2-inch LCD screen and an HD sensor. But, much like <a href="http://www.gadgetreview.com/2011/04/zoom-q3hd-camcorder-review.html"title="Zoom Q3HD" target="_blank">ZOOM’s Q3HD, Olympus is placing the emphasis on not just video, but audio by capturing 24 bit/96 hHz linear PCM stereo sound along with 1080p footage.

Below the 2-inch LCD is an additional screen that measure 1.46-inches and displays time, audio levels and battery life. Unlike the Q3HD, which featured a fixed focal length, the LS-20M has a 4.1mm auto focus lens, which Olympus claims can also record in low lighting.

The two condenser mics can record in linear PCM (WAV files) and MP3 formats, so you’ll have options when it comes to how much storage you want to utilize given the circumstance. And speaking of which it ships with a 2GB SD card, which of course can be upgraded to suit your needs.

A set of Magic Movie special effects settings, 4 of them to be exact (Rock, Sketch, Pinhole, Pop) provide some pizzaz to your recordings, and an HDMI , rechargeable battery and USB output with cord round out the features.

The LS-20M, which measures 5.3-inches long and weighs 5.4 ounces, will be available this June for $299.99.

New Full-HD Video Combined with Magic Movie Special Effects and Pristine Audio Recording to Create Movies that Look and Sound Like Professional Productions

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., May 3, 2011 – Transforming everyday videos into memorable movies can be a challenge, but the Olympus LS-20M Linear PCM recorder makes it easy to add creative flair to any recording with the introduction of high-definition video. Record a live recital, create home movies and upload amazing linear PCM audio and high-definition video with the new Olympus LS-20M. Incorporating technologies much like those that debuted in recent Olympus digital imaging products, the new LS-20M is the first Olympus recorder that captures and edits 1080p HD video while recording 24 bit/96 hHz Linear PCM stereo sound. Combined with four different optional Magic Movie special effects features, the LS-20M enables users to create home movies that look and sound like professional productions in a device that’s so compact it fits in your pocket.

“The potential number of uses for the Olympus LS-20M Linear PCM recorder are limitless,” said Amy Leslie, product manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc. “Anyone looking to capture and upload music performances, sporting events, weddings, meetings or just create their own fun videos, can use the LS-20M for their personal and professional audio and video needs.”

Lights, Camera, Action
The new Olympus LS-20M takes handheld recording to a new dimension with HD video. By combining Olympus’ superior audio capabilities, cutting-edge design and the outstanding optical performance expected from Olympus, this all-in-one handheld offers the versatility and practicality you need.

Olympus is creating more ways for consumers to share memories and express themselves through video. Users can capture full HD movies utilizing one of three video format settings up to 1080p for stunning HD video clarity. The camera lens and microphones are located on top of the unit – just point the device in the direction of the intended object and hit record. A crisp, 2.0-inch color LCD on the front of the device clearly displays the video as its being shot. Below the video LCD is a 1.46-inch LCD data screen that displays time, audio levels and battery life. Want to record a live recital that looks and sounds like a professional ballet? The LS-20M can do that, just point and record.

The HD video compression format makes it easy to upload videos to Facebook, YouTube, iTunes, Vimeo and other web-based content sharing sites, and the resolution offers remarkable detail on modern home theatre systems.

The camera features a 4.1mm (16:9 at 49mm, 4:3 at 59mm) autofocus lens and 4x digital zoom delivering premium video no matter where you are shooting. The Olympus LS-20M allows users to record in low light for more dramatic footage and also offers close-up video shooting. The combination of video and audio excellence has an infinite number of possibilities. Record a close-up of a hummingbird in HD video and set it to your own sound track of better-than-CD quality audio.

Studio-Grade Audio
Olympus has been on the cutting edge of audio recording technology since inventing the microcassette format in 1969. The fourth in the series, the LS-20M lives up to the company’s renowned history of Linear PCM recording capability, to capture the rich, dynamic sound quality of music performances; like a studio in your pocket. The device captures rich, dynamic sound with its two condenser mics, and the ability to record in Linear PCM (WAV files) and MP3 formats. Use internal or external microphones to record better-than-CD quality audio for movies that sound like they were made in a Hollywood studio.

The recording features don’t stop at amazing sound quality. For your convenience, the Olympus LS-20M offers manual or auto-level recording. The “auto” level is perfect if you are recording from the crowd. Thanks to the manual level, musicians can capture optimal sound checks and live performances.

Certain settings, like crowded press conferences or a live show at a packed club can provide unwanted background noise that can later be incredibly frustrating. Thankfully, the Olympus LS-20M features a switchable low-cut filter that enables users to eliminate low-frequency sounds and unwanted background noises, like coughing. Collaborating musicians who want to monitor the recording progress on the fly can do so with the built-in speaker.

The Olympus LS-20M voice-activation feature automatically starts a recording when a certain level of sound is reached. The self-timer feature starts the recording process after a predetermined amount of time; both are ideal for recording a performance or video without having to operate the recorder.

Movie Making Magic
Specially designed to expand the potential of your creativity, the new, simple to operate, Magic Movie special effects technology turns scenes of everyday life into extraordinary images that are distinctive and compelling. Using technology from Olympus’ cameras, Magic Movie allows users to create exciting videos, then upload and share them with the world on YouTube or Facebook. Unleash your creative side by incorporating linear PCM audio with your own artistic expression.

The LS-20M Magic Movie special effects settings:

Rock — create your own rock video! Step on stage with the classic Rock Magic Movie setting, featuring saturated black images and bright, bold background colors;
Sketch – the Sketch Magic Movie setting turns your video into a living and breathing pencil drawing, reminiscent of some popular 80’s videos. Sketch adds an artistic feel and poetic flavor to your recordings;
Pinhole –the Pinhole Magic Movie setting allows users to record video with soft, darkened outside edges – enhancing the subject in the center of the video. Pinhole is great for setting a mood to tie in with the melody or focus of your recorded sound;
Pop — The Pop Magic Movie setting super-saturates colors to create a brighter, more vivid video recording. Turn your world into a work of pop art!
Powerful Punch in a Compact Package
The Olympus LS-20M features a lightweight, durable, black body with silver function buttons in a slim, pocket-size device that fits in your palm. At just 5.3 inches long and 5.4 ounces, the LS-20M provides remarkable power in a convenient and portable size.

The attractive Olympus LS-20M is eye-catching and designed with ease-of-use in mind, with the control panel located just below the video and data LCDs. As the previous LS-series models, the record button lights up when activated and the thumb panel enables easy adjustments to settings while recording. A switch on the right side panel allows for easy transition from audio/video to audio-only recording.

Inputs at the base of the unit offer easy access to USB and HDMI connections. Plugging the device into a computer or tablet for fast video uploads couldn’t be easier.

Accessories
The Olympus LS-20M is packaged with everything needed to make HD movies straight out of the box. It’s equipped with a 2GB SD card, one rechargeable Lithium ion battery, and a USB cable. The battery is easily charged by plugging in the LS-20M to a computer. For added memory, the LS-20M can handle SDHC cards up to 32GB for long hours of movie making.

An optional RS-30W Wireless Remote empowers users to start and stop the recording of the Olympus LS-20M without touching the unit. This is ideal for live performances, as the device can be placed in an optimal recording position and activated at a distance.

Pricing and Availability
The Olympus LS-20M provides excellent audio and HD video recording of premium movies at a highly competitive price: estimated street price of $299.99 (U.S.). It will be available in June 2011.

There are hi-speed point and shoot cameras and then there is the Fastec TS3Cine. While its form factor is anything but pocket sized, it boasts the awesome capability to capture 1280×1024 at 500fps. Dial that down to 720p and you’ll achieve 720fps. Serious slow-mo for the prosumer and at an HD resolution – that’s pretty unheard of. Take it another resolution lower and you’ll achieve 20,000fps, though what that figure is is unknown.

Adding to the TS3Cine’s unorthodox qualities is a massive 7-inch LCD on its back. Word is that the battery pack is good for up to 3 hours on a single charge and there are variety of recording options, which includes BMP, TIFF, DNG or JPG files, as well as AVIs. In terms of storage there is always the requisite SD card slot, but that can serve as a back up as this kit includes two SSD options, 128GB and 256GB, the latter boasting a $2,000 premium on top of the $29,900 price tag.
