Top testers were pleased with the large 34-inch screen size offered by the Nixeus EDG 34 and loved the deep blacks it was capable of, courtesy of its high contrast ratio. Still, they felt its ergonomics were mediocre and did not appreciate its poor viewing angles.

Product Snapshot

Overview

The Nixeus EDG 34 is a mid-tier 34-inch display announced in late 2019. The curved gaming monitor has a decent 144Hz refresh rate and can get as bright as 400 nits. While these features may not rival some of the best computer monitors or even the best gaming monitors in the market, they certainly make it one of the top-rated ultrawide monitors available. It has a 1440p screen resolution for crisp imaging, and its low input lag of 4.3ms matches that of the Samsung JG50. The display also has support for both FreeSync and G-Sync technology, and its support for HDR makes it a more viable option for vivid imagery compared to the MSI MAG271CQR or the Samsung C27RG5, which both cannot render HDR content.

Consensus

our Verdict

The Nixeus EDG 34 managed to impress a lot of reviewers with its gaming performance during their tests, and even though its screen is not as large as the 38-inches offered by the LG 38GN950-B, experts seemed satisfied with its 34-inch screen real estate. Experts from TFT Central were delighted with its 3610:1 contrast ratio, and they confirmed that blacks remained deep and well visible during their experiments. Its 4.3ms input lag may not be as low as the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9’s 2.3ms, but product reviewers still established during their testing that this was low enough for quick gaming responsiveness. Just like the MSI Optix MAG273R, the EDG 34 comes equipped with dual HDMI 2.0 ports, and with an exceptional 95.4% coverage of the SDR color gamut, critics from Rtings established that the QHD monitor handled SDR content quite well during their tests. They also liked that it had a 144Hz refresh rate and a good peak brightness level of up to 400 nits.

However, its lack of support for VRR through HDMI proved disappointing. Reviewers also did not like its poor viewing angles and had difficulty making adjustments because of its mediocre ergonomics.

Reason to Buy

  • Outstanding contrast ratio
  • Large screen size
  • Low input lag
  • Decent peak brightness
  • Supports HDR content

Reason to Avoid

  • Poor viewing angles
  • Mediocre ergonomics
  • No VRR support through HDMI

The 144Hz refresh rate offered by the Nixeus EDG 34 doesn’t match up to the 180Hz that the LG 34GP950G-B provides, making the LG display more ideal for gaming.

However, the LG’s native contrast of 836:1 is far less than the EDG 34’s 3610:1, so its blacks are not as deep in a dark setting.

The Nixeus EDG 34 features a larger screen than the Nixeus EDG 27, but conversely, the EDG 27 has a higher 165Hz refresh rate than the EDG 34’s 144Hz. The EDG 27 also has a peak brightness rating of 400 nits, which is higher than the EDG 34’s 363 nits.

The Nixeus EDG 34 comes equipped with a VA panel, allowing it to deliver more profound blacks courtesy of its 3610:1 contrast ratio compared to the LG 24GN850-B’s 960:1 contrast ratio. On the flip side, the LG monitor features a much faster response time of 5.8ms compared to the EDG 34’s 14.4ms, resulting in much better motion handling.
