For better or for worse, smartwatches are headed to stores, and possibly your wrist. And LG doesn’t want to be left out of this particular game, so the G Watch, designed to work with all your Android toys, is on the way. And what’s a product without a product announcement video.
Where’s The Girl With The Sledgehammer?</h4?
OK, so this ad is a wee bit overblown for what amounts to slapping a second screen on your wrist and using it to check your phone without checking your phone. But, first of all, it’s just not the tech community if there isn’t a ridiculous video announcing your product. And, secondly, while the smartwatch may be little more than a niche product, LG’s version sure has a lot to recommend it.
First of all, as LG themselves note, it’s designed to take a little abuse. The G Watch is both shock resistant and water resistant, meaning that if you pay for this you won’t have to worry about the elements trashing it. As for why you might pay for it, it’s largely a watch with more features thanks to Android Wear; it displays flights you need to catch, appointments, the weather, and, oh, right, the time. And you can search Google just by talking to it, which will have the handy side effect of creeping people out on the bus.
But Will You Buy It?
The big question is what the market is for not just the G Watch but the host of other smartwatches coming down the pike or already on the market. It’s not clear that smartwatches have more than a cult following, even after the success of Pebble that fans of the form keep pointing to. But hey, if nothing else, it looks pretty cool, and that might be enough for some.
