If you live in the US, the term “dashcam” probably only comes up in your daily conversation when it’s combined with the words “Russian” or “holy crap, did that car just get totaled by a dump truck full of manure?” But in truth, it’s a good idea to have one, and the CrashCatcher might just be the most useful dashcam you can get.
Two Way Mirror
Why? Well, to start with, it films both out your windshield and within the car. That may not seem terribly important, at first, but it can be. Anybody who’s been in an accident and thus an argument over that accident can tell you that the first thing most people claim is that you were yakking on your cell phone and weren’t paying attention. Having video proof of that not being the case is pretty much an instant win in court. It even records audio.
Another nice touch is the form factor; the Crash Catcher is designed to be attached to your rearview mirror, safely off the dash and with no suction cups or clue to mess with. That way, your vision isn’t obstructed and the controls for the camera are within easy reach. Although we do have to admit poking at buttons on your mirror is probably a good way to get into a crash, so maybe configure the settings before you fire up your car.
There are a few touches we wish this had. For example, while the FAQ claims video of the accident and the time and date stamp are the key pieces, it would be nice to have GPS coordinates logged as well. Still, it’s a simple to use cam that makes life easier if you’re in an accident… especially if you get hit by somebody who isn’t on the ethical up and up.
