I’m from a different era of gaming. Particularly the Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros. days. I think I still even have my old school Nintendo cartridges somewhere in my garage! If your’e like me and reminisce about the old gaming days then you’ll probably love the RetroN 5 gaming console by Hyperkin. Unlike the new school consoles of today, this one supports games from all your old favorites! Here’s a couple of reasons why old school gamers will love the RetroN5 (that go a bit more in-depth from our previous post on the system)!
1. One Console, 10 Systems
Yeah, you read that right. The RetroN5 supports 10 systems, including NES, Famicom, SNES, Super Famicom, Genesis, Mega Drive, and even Game Boy models (Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance)! (If you don’t know what these consoles are, Google them!), so it has ports for all of them. It’s time to dust off your old cartridges and get a group of you childhood buddies together to relive the good old days! And you can also play Master System games but you have to use the Power Base Converter (that’s sold separately).
2. Modern Enhancements
But not only does it support numerous favored gaming consoles, but it does so with enhanced resolution; improved interpolated sound so that you hear your favorite gaming tunes in a smoother, crisper sound output; screenshot captures that are saved as JEPG images on a SD card for easy sharing from your computer to social media sites like Facebook (to brag, of course; and the ability to have on the fly save states. That’s way better than any of the original consoles, allowing you old school fun with a modern twist. Its HDMi port has a max output resolution of 720p and supports 60 frames per second, allowing your old games to look even better with modern technology.
3. Go Wireless
One of the many awesome benefits of today’s gaming world is that you can go wireless and don’t have to be tied down to wires. The consoles utilizes Bluetooth technology with its controller that has a range up to 30 feet. It also features a microswitch directional pad, two programmable macro buttons and a home button for quick in-game access to feature like today’s controllers have.
4. Or Opt To Go Old School
If you feel like really being authentic and want to go wired, the system has six controller ports, with two for each of the original controllers. This is great for anyone who still has a few of those somewhere in their garage (if not, maybe you’ll find some at yard sales).
5. Comforts Of Modern Consoles
And to provide you some familiarity, the RetroN 5 features software that meshes elements that you love of modern consoles to retro gaming. The Game Genie is a built-in feature that makes sure your nostalgia isn’t killed by a few games that are harder than you remember. It will clean up and convert your games to crisp, clean HD resolution, but if you want a more retro feel, you have the option to play with the included “scan lines” video filter. They dynamic controller mapping allows you to customize it to your liking, even with original controllers.
6. Cheat Codes Are Fair Play
Remember when recharging health code used to take a cheat code, so you’d buy all those cheat code magazines to be in the know? Well if you still remember them, the RetroN 5 has pre-built cheats that can easily be accessed at any point during gameplay for most games. This should be a great test of your gaming memory.
7. Save State
Thanks to the save state feature of the RetroN 5, you can easily save at ay point in your game and still come back to exactly where you left off with no passwords needed. You can access these features without the need to end your play session or reset, just like modern consoles.
So after you’ve read this, your gaming heart must be beating pretty fast, wondering where you can get your hands on one right? Well, here’s the thing, there no actual release date yet. Their site doesn’t even have pricing info. And if you go to their Facebook page, there’s a picture saying “June 6.” We’re assuming that’s when it might be released or at least more info will be provided. Whatever the case is, we know what Facebook page we’ll be stalking for the next few weeks!
