Not too long ago, we did a detailed comparison of HTC One M8 and iPhone 5S, detailing all the major differences between the two handsets. We’ve used both of them for some time, and let me just clear one thing, both are great performers. They both come with a different operating system, which also has an impact on the performance, but if you’re wondering which one we’ll go for, the answer is: HTC One M8.
Why? Well, there are a lot of reasons, but I’m going to outline a few important ones. Do note that this is my opinion, which can be different from yours, so just stay calm.
1. Beautiful 5-inch display
Let’s just start with the most basic one. With time, smartphones are getting bigger and bigger, but personally, I’m not a big fan of gigantic handsets such as the Lumia 1520 or Xperia Z Ultra.
Apple iPhone 5S comes with a 4-inch display sporting a resolution of 640 x 1136 pixels, and Apple is following its one hand use rule for it — although rumors do suggest Apple is catching up with the market and is cooking up a new iPhone 6 with a larger display, possibly 4.7-inch, but it’s not official yet.
On the other hand, the display on the HTC One M8 is 5-inch and sports a 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution with a 441 ppi pixel density, which is way bigger than the one found in the iPhone 5S. The screen is brilliant, virtually from every possible viewing angle. The large display makes it easy to consume content on the go.
2. Duo Camera with Depth Sensor & uFocus
This is another department which is very important to most of the smartphone users out in the wild. Before we proceed, you should know that introducing higher megapixels in a smartphone doesn’t mean it has a good camera. Before we say which device has a better camera, here are some technical specifications of the cameras found inside both devices.
Apple iPhone 5S comes with a 8 megapixel shooter with 1.5µ pixels sizeand f/2.2 aperture, while the HTC One M8 comes with a 4MP UltraPixel camera with 2µm pixel size, but with a better aperture, that is, f/2.0. Both devices comes with amazing camera capabilities, but HTC One M8 has more to offer in my opinion. The depth sensor and uFocus give users the ability to focus on one element in an image, which is on of those features I like the most.
3. Expandable Storage via MicroSD card
Apple iPhone 5S comes in various storage options: 16/32/64GB. However, the handset doesn’t offer expandable storage. On the other hand, HTC One M8 comes with 16GB storage on board, with a microSD card support of up to 128GB. Yes, 128GB, and for those who don’t know, Sandisk already announced a microSD card with this capacity. In addition, you also get 50GB free Google Drive storage for two years when you purchase the HTC One M8.
I tend to go around, capture photos, save documents and what not, on my smartphone. Therefore, I need additional storage on the go, and HTC One M8 offers me a way to do that. The world is moving to cloud storage, but I prefer to save it on the phone rather than in the cloud, especially my photo gallery.
4. Looks Great In Hand
The looks is one of those things where both stack up against each other. Both come with a premium look, and offers amazing design, but after personally testing both devices, I think HTC One M8 looks much better, due to its smoothly crafted round design, which feels great in hand. HTC has taken cues from their previous HTC One M7, and refined it in the case of the HTC One M8.
5. HTC Advantage
HTC is offering its HTC Advantage program with the purchase of HTC One M8, and other HTC devices. This program offers users with a one-time free screen replacement warranty within the first six months of purchase. Although the handset comes with a pretty decent design that reduces the risk of getting the screen cracked, do not fret even if you get it damaged during the first six months since HTC is offering users with a free screen replacement for once.
Additionally, it’s not a very easy task to get the screen repaired since the device is pretty difficult to repair. The folks at iFixit gave it a repairability score of 2, making the handset very difficult to repair — it’s difficult to open the device, and the display assembly is pretty difficult to remove.
The program also states that HTC will provide latest Android updates for the handsets for two years from the launch date of the device, making sure that it’s running the latest OS. The company has been pretty transparent when it comes to Android updates, and launched a software update page, showing the progress of the update for each of its devices, as well as details on how the update process works. Additionally, users also get 25GB to 50GB free Google Drive storage space for two years depending on the device — HTC One M8 comes with 50GB of free Google Drive storage.
6. Better Front-facing Camera
I’m a regular video calling user so I also need a camera that can offer me a better quality during video calls. Apple iPhone 5S comes with a 1.2MP front-facing camera with 720p video recording capabilities, while the HTC One M8 features an impressive 5MP front-facing camera with 1080p video at 30 fps. So, which one’s better in this area? For me, it’s HTC One M8.
7. Bigger Battery
Battery is another important aspect for any smartphone owner. I’m pretty sure none of us want our smartphone to run out of battery on important occasions. Although both devices offer a decent battery time with regular usage, HTC One M8 has more to offer when it comes to battery. Apple iPhone 5S comes with a 1,560 mAh battery while the HTC One M8 features a much larger 2,600 mAh battery. According to the company, the HTC One M8 can offer users with 20 hours of talk time on 3G.
The HTC One M8 definitely offers a better battery time, thanks to the bigger battery, Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and the new Extreme Saving Mode. The mode can offer users with a battery time of as high as 14 days on a full charge, and can deliver 60 hours of extra standby time at 20% power, 30 hours at 10% power and 15 hours at 5% power.
There you go folks. Before you start bashing me the tag of “Android fanboy,” let me tell you one thing: I’m a fan of good devices. I’ve used almost all operating systems for a considerable amount of time, whether its iOS, Windows Phone, Blackberry or Android — I love iOS as the operating system due to its easier to use interface and simplicity.
