The 2014 remake of Godzilla has an official trailer, and we can take away two things from it. One, this is a very serious giant monster movie about San Francisco getting crushed by a lizard, and two, Godzilla’s bringing friends and lots of them.
All-Out Monsters Attack
Of course, there is a precedent for serious Godzilla movies. Well before Minilla, Godzooky, and a whole string of profoundly embarrassing kiddie flicks that wrapped up the Showa era of Godzilla movies (yes, they have eras), the first Godzilla movie was an earnest mediation about the costs of war and the dangers of nuclear weapons. It holds up surprisingly well, even sixty years and generations of effects technology improvements later. And in 2014, it looks to be dealing with the same issues.
Destroy All Monsters
The trailer plays it close to the vest, but there are a few effects shots that let the cat out of the bag. For example, this shot of a suspiciously bird-like kaiju knocking some planes out of the sky:
That indicates we’ll be seeing Rodan, the gigantic semi-pterodactyl as well. There’s another hint as well that a regular foe of Godzilla will be making an appearance:
There aren’t a whole lot of enemies the big G has that have a hook and a room-clearing blast radius; that looks an awful lot to many G-fans like none other than Gigan.
Godzilla Raids Again
We won’t have to wait very long to find out what, precisely, the Big G is going to do to the Bay Area, aside from finally drive down real estate prices; the movie comes out May 16th. And we’ll be curious to see what it does with Godzilla and the Godzilla mythos… not to mention if Rodan and Gigan are really going to make their American debuts. If nothing else, it’ll be better than seeing a giant iguana try to squish Matthew Broderick.
