Contrary to popular belief, police officers rarely need to use their firearms in the field. And truthfully, ideally police officers never have to use lethal force; after all, they’re not the Army. So F4 decided to create something that helps reduce the need to police to discharge their weapons: A can of pepper spray you can mount on a rifle.
Spray And Pray
Yes, you read that correctly; it’s a can of pepper spray on the bottom rail of your typical police rifle. Which hopefully won’t be coming out in the first place, but if they have to, the idea is that police can default to the incapacitating, non-lethal option first, instead of hosing the area with bullets.
Non-Lethal, But No Fun
It’s worth noting that pepper spray is often all that’s needed to take down many would-be criminals. If you’ve never gotten any in your mucus membranes, trust us: It hurts, a lot. But you also eventually manage to get it out of your system and feel a lot better, which is why it’s so popular with police forces. Capsaicin allergies are a lot less likely in the populace than dying painfully of bullet wounds, and being able to actually bring in a criminal for trial is kind of the entire job of the police force. So it’s easy to see the value in something that lets you resort to the non-lethal, first.
Needless to say, officers will still have the option of firing off their guns if the situation calls for it. But putting more tools to, you know, not kill people in the hands of people who have to make those split-second decisions is undeniably a good thing. Of course, it’d be even better if we didn’t need to issue firearms at all, but until that day comes, the pepper spray will be a good fill-in.
