Titanfall-1

Titanfall is widely considered one of the first tests of the Xbox One, and Microsoft expects it to be a hit; witness the fancy controller that costs more than the actual game. But if you want to try before you buy, an open beta is available right now on the Xbox One.

Beta, But Not Broken

First of all, yes, we’ve tried it out, and yes, it’s a beta. But to be honest, we’ve played betas that are a lot worse. You can actually play the game and over the last few days, quite a few issues and problems have been addressed, especially around matching and server stability. It’s still going to crash, but you should jump on for a few hours and see if it’s the game for you.

Technical Achievement

It also has to be said that the tweaks were for the better. The Xbox One controller has gotten an update specifically for this game and it must be said that it controls like a dream. Similarly, you can feel the time and love Respawn put into this game, even from the somewhat limited beta; it’s not going to be perfect, of course, but it definitely communicates the fun and excitement of the game.

Killer App Or Killed?

That said, there are a few points that might be cause for concern for potential Titanfall buyers. Essentially, if you’ve got a spotty Internet connection, you might not be able to play this. A few quick tests using WiMax found some cause for concern, albeit that’s obvious right from the start. Secondly, it doesn’t really feel like a game with broad appeal. If you absolutely love multiplayer shooters, and it’s true that many do, this is definitely going to be the game for you. But if not, you might want to hold off.
