There are a lot of accessories for the GoPro, not least because the tiny little action cam is hugely popular. But it’s also sometimes hard to get a stable shot with it, especially handheld. Why not get your very own GoPro Steadicam?
Keep It Steady
The device in question is, of course, the EasyGimbal, a recently Kickstarted idea that essentially isolates the GoPro in a smooth gimbal. You just grab the pistol grip and start panning the shot; the GoPro will stay in one place, no matter what you do, and allow you to set up and pull off elaborate tracking shots.
Well, more elaborate tracking shots.
Why A Gimbal?
Some will look at the EasyGimbal’s price and wonder why it costs more than the camera ($600 to be precise), but the truth is that keeping a little camera absolutely stable is incredibly difficult to do. The EasyGimbal uses a mix of brushless motors and electronics to ensure that the camera stays absolutely still even while you move. Essentially, it’s the equivalent of getting a small robot to hug your GoPro and keep it still for you.
A Camera Is Only As Good As Its Operator
That said, there are a few catches here worth noting. The most basic is that while this will keep the camera still, it won’t keep you still: You bounce and jostle a lot more when you walk than you realize, and that motion will be reflected in the camera movement. So if you want smooth, perfect shots on foot, you’ll need to invest in some dance lessons and learn tai chi. No, really: Most professional camera operators learn tai chi to smooth out their shots.
But, beyond that, this looks to be the best gimbal you can buy for your tiny little camera. It starts shipping next month.
