Most classic board games, when mashed-up with TV shows, offer little more than a cosmetic change to the board and pieces. It’s still Monopoly, just Monopoly where you buy the Death Star with credits instead of property in New Jersey with dollars. Walking Dead Risk, however, changes the game substantially.
Risk In More Ways Than One
For those who didn’t spend Friday nights in college arguing over whether or not it was strategically useful to hold Kamchatka, an overview of the original game is in order. Essentially, it’s a world-conquering simulator; you place armies in your territory and roll dice, using some math to figure out whether or not you take that territory.
The ultimate goal is, of course, to drive your friends to the sea. Walking Dead Risk adds, as you may have guessed, zombies.
Us Vs. Them Vs. Undead Them
Here’s how it works; every turn, more zombies spawn on the board. Zombies essentially serve as a mindless extra player; they’re going to build up their armies and attack. You also have a scenario to play out at the end of the turn, drawn from the world of the Walking Dead. So, you not only have to fight your fellow survivors for resources, you also have to ensure you don’t get eaten by zombies.
Adding to the fun is that the game comes with two rule sets. If you’ve got some time on your hands, you can play by classic Risk rules; if you’ve only got the night, there’s a quick and brutal ruleset that speeds things up.
Use Your Brains
We’ve got many ways to fight zombies in our entertainment. Heck, half of all video games will likely be dedicated to killing the undead by 2015. But this offers a chance to be a little more tactical, and besides, who doesn’t enjoy outwitting your friends and feeding them to the undead?
