Brewing beer is, for obvious reasons, a popular thing to do. It’s also a surprisingly difficult thing to do in some respects; brewing beer, it turns out, requires some of the toughest and most exacting food science many of us will ever attempt. Fortunately, this being science, there are tools to take care of the problem, like Brewbot.
Beer, By Robots
Brewbot is built to be professional gear; while it’s designed to be easy to use even for amateurs who have never brewed a beer before, it’s also being aimed at brewpubs looking to make small batches and breweries looking to do pilot tests of new recipes. The main ease of use comes in the fact that Brewbot is tied to a smartphone app. Instead of having to constantly check temperatures and pH, Brewbot comes front-loaded with sensors so that you’re automatically prompted to add the right stuff at the right time.
Industrial Grade Quality
Just as clever as loading this with sensors, though, is how Brewbot is being built. Instead of trying to build it out of custom-designed parts, the Brewbot team is first of all focusing on using standard catering tools where they can. Where they can’t, they’re building it out of food-grade stainless steel. All of it is controlled by an Arduino for open source and easy hackability, and it’s designed to both have a small profile so it can be tucked away in an area and to have a wood front so that your brewing robot is at least somewhat attractive.
It Costs, But It Saves
All this adds up to a machine that the developers believe makes beer at a cost of roughly forty-two cents a bottle. If that strikes you as considerably cheaper than your average beer, you’d be right. The only downside, though, is you’ll have to commit quite a lot up front for Brewbot; the Kickstarter currently wants $2400 for one, plus up to $240 in shipping.
