We all know that the iPhone 5S, in addition to tasteful white and tasteful black, will come in tacky gold. Sorry, but there’s no way gold isn’t tacky. But it seems that Apple is experimenting with other anodized colors, at least if the latest rumors are anything to go by.

The rumors are at least backed up with photos, as you can see; the claim is that we’ll get a graphite model as well. But how credible is it?

Well, arguing for the idea that this rumor is true is the fact that if Apple is going to anodize a case one color, it might as well offer more than a few. And truthfully, Apple has a history of making things colorful when it feels it’s not innovating enough: Look at what happened with the iMac, right before they introduce the iPod and iTunes. They also might want to counterbalance gold with something you might actually be seen in public using, and charcoal is a nice, neutral, tasteful color. It’s also a color we’ve seen on Apple products before; in fact, Apple really loves it.

On the other hand, it also seems pretty odd that Apple would be rolling out a line of colorful iPhones this early, especially since being in a rainbow of colors is really supposed to be the iPhone 5c’s deal. Similarly, four colors raises the question of how far Apple would be taking this. Three we sort of get, four seems a bit limited; if Apple goes, it tends to go all out. Although it may be replacing the white model, so that’s a factor.

Either way, it seems obvious that Apple’s got a bit more to the iPhone 5S than just the standard processor upgrades, and we’ll likely know more, one way or the other, come September. In the meantime, let us know: Would you buy a charcoal iPhone?
