Say camp fire and the last thing that will probably pop into your mind is the ability to charge your iPhone. But if heat, flames and boiling water come to mind, you’re actually not too far off the mark. Those three elements are exactly what you’ll need in order for the FlameStower to work.
Now, to be candid, this is not the first product I’ve seen that can charge a phone using a simple camp fire, or more importantly fire. This one, however, might be the slickest and most portable. You’ll need add water to the cup and then insert the blade portion of the FlameStower directly into the flame. If need be you can adjust the blade’s position to three different heights depending on the size of your fire. One it begins to heat up, which usually takes seconds, it will start to charge your phone, be it a good old fashioned flip phone or the latest iPhone.
So how does it accomplish this feat? The blade is connected to a Thermoelectric Generator, which when combined with water, converts the flames burn into useable energy.
Unfortunately, the FlameStower is no more effective at charging your iPhone than your laptop’s USB port – the max output is some where between 2w-3w. Your iPhone charger is 5w. Nevertheless, odds are you’ll be sitting around the campfire for hours to come, and if it comes down to an emergency scenario you’ll glad you had the 80z contraption on hand.
You can buy the FlameStower for $70.
