If you thought CryEngine 3 was a marvel. Then you might surmise, CryEngine 4 would be untterly phenomenal. Well don’t quit your day job. A soothsayer you are not–not specifically that is. Developer Crytek as a shiny new video to tout. It shows off some of the capabilities found in the next Crytek-made game engine. This new version is the first to drop the numeral indicating the version. Forever more, it will be know only CryEngine.
It may have had its name shortened. But the engine itself seems to have grown by leaps and bounds–especially in the area of texture complexity and fancy lighting and shading tricks. I could have sworn the CryEngine 3 was just announced. Time keeps on slipping… Apparently so! But CryEngine 3 is no slouch by any means. It’s used to power Crysis 3 which looks fantastic. But even beyond that, CryEngine 3 is the framework used by Cloud Imperium Games on their frighteningly ambitious open-world space combat simulator titled Star Citizen. The look of game owes it’s thanks to the CryEngine 3 loveliness. That engine is a beast. Using it to created and power an open world game is clearly one the major reasons Star Citizen is still the most successful Kickstarter project to date.
