One of the big ideas in health recently can essentially be boiled down to “covering yourself with sensors to quantify exactly what’s happening to your body at all times.” OK, so maybe that’s not really “boiling it down”, but you get the idea. Just keep an eye out for Fuelbands on your daily commute and you’ll see what we mean. Still, tracking your sleep can be annoying, not least because not all of us enjoy keeping a wristband on during the night. So Beddit is hoping to give you the info you need on your sleep patterns, without making you wear any sensors.
There are still sensors involved, of course, but they go on the bed, not the wrist. Beddit’s sensor strip is tucked under the sheet and is thin enough that the company promises you won’t notice it. And in exchange, the sensor tracks quite a bit: Snoring and breathing patterns, your resting heart rate and other physical data, your movements during sleep, your circadian rhythms, and environmental factors like noise are all recorded by the sensor.
But, of course, data is only part of the equation, and Beddit comes with, what else, an app that allows you to look at your sleep patterns. The app presents your sleep patterns in a timeline that starts when you go to bed and lays out your data from beginning to end. Thus, you can scroll through, get a look at what’s happening, and figure out what to do from there.
This seems particularly useful for those dealing with breathing issues during the night, or who have to use a CPAP machine in order to sleep properly.
