Pebble e watch

Starting today you can buy the Pebble at Best Buy’s website for $149.99.  If you seek a hands on experience, the big box retailer will begin selling them in store for the same price on July 7th, this coming Sunday.

Pebble, which isn’t new to the smartwatch space, raised over $10 million on Kickstarter and sold 85,000 of their e-ink watches that connect with your smartphone and provide a variety of updates without having to look at your handset.  It connects via Bluetooth, and is said to have a 7-day battery life thanks to an e-ink display.

Upon launch iOS users will only receive text message notifications, where as Android handset owners will be able to view SMSes right on the Pebble’s screen (this may have changed by now).  Nevertheless, both OSes will be able to display caller ID, email, calendar alerts, Facebook messages, Twitter updates, and weather alerts. The Pebble is also app compatible allowing you to control your music, track workouts (cycling and running) as well as perform a variety of other tasks, including modify the watchfaces.

And while the Pebble comes in a variety of colors, the Black edition will only be sold, at least for now, at Best Buy.  Presumably Pebble is will make the colored versions available once they fulfill Kickstarter contributor orders, though seeing the Black edition sold at retail before they receive theirs may lead to some resentment.

Of note, this space is becoming heavily fragmented:  Androidly, Metawatch and more.
