The GoPro HD Hero is probably one of the more popular cameras out there. And for good reason; it packs high resolution, surprisingly decent sound, and a fisheye lens into a rugged little package. It’s great for extreme sports, but it’s also pretty difficult to take with you under the water without tying up your hands, especially if you’re using dive lights and other undersea filming gear. Which is where the Octomask comes in.

It may sound like a Batman villain from the early ’60s, but the Octomask is actually a diving mask with a GoPro mount built directly into it for all GoPro cameras. If you’ve seen GoPro headbands, it’s a fairly similar setup, although this looks a substantial bit sturdier. And, of course, it’s got a waterproof housing that makes it simple to use. It has a hinge for easy adjustment, as well, so you can do a quick tilt to get the shot you want.

The big appeal, of course, is that it looks where your head is pointing. As anybody who’s done underwater filming can tell you, part of the problem, especially with wildlife, is missing the shot. So being able to simply look at something and know it’s getting filmed will be useful to say the least.

Our main concern is that information from the manufacturer is a bit thin on the ground; the official site appears to still be under construction. So before taking this too deep, you might want to swap the housing out with one you’ve used and trust that’s rated to the depth you want to take it.

But if you just want to catch video while doing some light diving, this should do nicely. Currently it’s $80 on Amazon.com.
