Binoculars are one of those tools only a very few of us actually need, but that can really add something to the experience of sports games, nature walks, and observing your neighbors without their knowledge, because you know their dog is crapping on your lawn. And now, with Carson’s new binocular adapter, they can be even more “useful”!

Joking aside, this is actually quite a clever idea that adds functionality to two nerd toys. The adapter, referred to as HookUpz for some reason, is much like other iPhone lens adapters; you slide it over the top of your phone, ensuring you’ve got a snug fit, and then slide one of your eyepieces into the adapter. It fits most standard sized binoculars, and essentially turns one side of the binocs into a telescope for your iPhone. That said, we are a bit skeptical that you can just hold your iPhone and have the binoculars hover there, so it might be a bit more involved than it looks.

Still, it’s hard to argue with the result. Your iPhone now has a much more highly powered lens for taking photos and videos. True, there are other solutions to this particular problem, but this one is designed to make use of something you already own, and might even have with you. The appeal for amateur nature photographers and sports fans stands out in particular, although we should note spying on people and taking their photo from a distance is probably illegal and is definitely a bad idea, even if they do have a dog that’s killing your grass with its byproducts.

In short, if you own an iPhone, and you own a pair of binoculars, this will allow you to combine the two and get even more use out of them. And, if you don’t, it will finally give you an excuse to buy a pair of binoculars.
