Finally, the Wikipad will go on sale on June 11th for $249.99. And while I’d like to say better late than never, the Wikipad’s hardware is already growing a bit long in the tooth, especially when compared to Nvidia’s Shield, which runs the company’s Tegra 4 chip.
That being said, the Wikipad will be available to buy in Best Buy, Walmart, and Tiger Direct, though it’s not clear if there will be any physical retail units.
The now 7-inch tablet – it was 10-inches – sports a 1280×800 display, a Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, a 2MP camera, 16GB of storage (expandable via a microSD card slot), HDMI output, GPS, accelerometer, and a removable dual analog controller. It’ll ship with Android 4.1 installed.
The Wikipad will not only be compatible with Android games, but will be supported by PlayStation Mobile games from Sony, and TegraZone – NVIDIA’s free app that showcases the best games optimized for the Tegra processor.
It remains to be seen if the Wikipad can compete with the likes of iOS and the variety of other tablets already on the market. Not too long ago Archos released their Gamepad, a 7-inch svelte tablet with built-in gaming controls. Moreover, Nvidiia plans to release the Shield, a portable gaming rig that is powered by a Tegra 4 processor, which is able to support – in addition to Android games – full blown PC games streamed from a PC.
