There’s nothing quite as classy as serving your guests wine out of a carafe. It bespeaks taste and refinement, or at least a desire to keep your guests from seeing the label. Although you might be straddling the line between “taste and refinement” and “gross” if you use Etienne Meneau’s “strange carafes”, based on the body’s internal structures.

Meneau is a sculptor by trade, and was inspired by the naturally branching blood vessels and airways in our bodies. For example, the Big and Little Heart decanters reflect the major pathways blood takes to and from the heart, although in order to get the wine pouring out of the top, Meneau had to take a little bit of artistic license. Meneau didn’t take the easy way, either: Each of these are borosilicate glass, which is a much harder material to use than, say, plastic.

Sure, they’re designed more to be visually appealing than they are to be actual, functional items that you can use around the house. In fact they’re actually kind of terrible for actually serving wine in: Can you imagine cleaning the things? That said, if you must show off, at least they’ll hold one bottle of wine for serving.

And, unlike most products of this kind, you might be able to get your hands on one: These are, in fact, for sale, each one in a limited edition of eight, or you can be really pretentious and get one of the four artist’s proofs. Of course, each one will run you a pretty penny, as they start around €1200, or $1590, and only get more expensive from there.

On the other hand, it’ll be worth every penny to pull this thing out at Thanksgiving and ask your relatives if they want another glass. Their looks of confusion and horror? Worth every penny.
