It would seem that Samsung will stop at nothing to be maintain their spot as the number one smartphone maker. Today, the company announced that they’ll give away 1 million copies of Jay Z’s newest album.
But they won’t be giving them away to just any fool that steps to the front of the line. You’ll need to have a Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4, or Galaxy Note II in your possession along with a special Samsung app that will be available in the Android Play Store on June 24th.
Jay Z’s newest album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, drops July 4th for the masses. But those with fast thumbs, and the aforementioned devices, will be able to pick it up on July 1st…if they’re lucky enough.
That all being said, Jay Z isn’t doling the albums out for free. Apparently Samsung is tossing him $5 a download, which if you made it through grade school equates to $5 million – a drop in the proverbial bucket for the Korean consumer electronics company. I’d expect that Samsung will do their best to recoup some costs through the app, especially since it hits the store 7 days earlier than the giveaway. Moreover, Samsung is netting a crap load of marketing at what is presumably a relatively cost effective rate.
