Pining for a Samsung Galaxy S4, currently the world’s best-selling smartphone? Well, if you lived in Switzerland you could have one for free simply by staring at the phone for 60 minutes. Sounds simple, right? Not quite.
Swisscom set up kiosks in a select number of train stations throughout the pint sized country. Commuters were told that if they could keep their eyes locked on the device – blinking was allowed – they’d win the smartphone free and clear, right there. To track their progress, and help promote the S4’s functionality, the carrier used the phone’s Smart Pause function, which knows when you’ve looked away from the device and pauses the playback of a video. However, what wasn’t explicitly expressed was that Swisscom was gonna mess with each participant.
Distractions included barking dogs, arguing couples and musicians. They even tossed in a good old-fashioned motorcycle crash and a hot dog vendor set a flame after mishandling his cart. Needless to say, many of the contestants failed, even after coming within minutes of winning.
