iPhone 5

Apple will forever be under intense pressure and scrutiny to innovate and produce the next best thing be it in computing or mobile electronics.  So it’s no surprise when a rumor emerges pointing to a set of devices that are designed to compete with those that threaten their market share.

We’ve long heard about a cheaper iPhone.  One made of plastic and has a price point that hovers in the $100 range.  Now according to an inside source, Apple not only has plans to produce a cheaper handset that will appear later this year, but one that will be adorned with your choice of color, much like the iMac’s of a time past.

“Trial production was originally planned to start in June, but the mixing of colours is taking longer than expected as Apple has very high and idealistic standards,” said one source in Asia, adding 20 million plastic iPhones are expected to ship in the October-December quarter.

But the big rumor, according to a Reuter’s source, is that Apple will possibly produce a 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch device.  By all accounts the latter sized devices seems like a stretch since it would encroach on the iPad Mini’s market.  Where as a 4.7-inch handset isn’t that far-fetched, especially given that Samsung’s latest smartphone, the Galaxy S4, measures 5-inches and is relatively svelte and usable despite its bigger screen.

The source says that these larger devices would be available sometime next year.  They also go onto say that Apple will in fact release an iPhone 5s in addition to the aforementioned candy colored ones.  The 5S will purportedly have some sort of fingerprint technology, which sounds anything like Apple, especially seeing as a biometric technology of this ilk isn’t very secure.
