Everybody’s favorite online shopping place, Amazon, has now launched virtual currency coins. Called Amazon Coins, customers can pay for apps from it’s app store for Android and other in-app items using these virtual coins. The first to get their hands on the new Amazon Coins were Kindle Fire customers in the United States, with Amazon giving them all 500 coins, which is worth $5. However, now anyone can purchase items using the Amazon Coins by going to the new Coins page and purchasing coins for themselves. For those who are interested, Amazon is currently offering a huge discount on the coins, up to 10% for $100 spent on coins, for those who convert US dollars in bulk into their Coins. This is pretty big for the e-commerce giant, given the fact that other online entities have tried to launch virtual currencies but failed, including Facebook. But in order to really succeed in their virtual coin venture, they need to convince customers that using coins is easier than paying with actual money. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see if Amazon Coins will do better than Facebook Credits or Microsoft Points.
