Terrafugia TF-X flying car

Well it’s no Lamborghini Egoista. Yet the newest generation TF-X flying car is another incredible vehicle born from lofty dreams and laser focused perseverance. What we have here is a street-legal vehicle for the average commuter, that’s more than a neat idea. This tech has even gained the approval of the FAA .

The TF-X is a project of near-mythic proportions. It’s multi-year endeavor of Terrafugia. According to them, pilots/commuters won’t even need a pilot’s license to operate the TF-X. The design is focused on safety  simplicity and convenience. Supposedly the vehicle will be partially autonomous as it can automatically avoid other air traffic, bad weather, restricted airspace and even land automatically. The user designates safe landing conditions. But a full-vehicle parachute is on deck if things go pear-shaped, along with a host of other safety precautions.

Terrafugia suggests a 5hour adjustment time needed to learn how to operate the TF-X. It’s said to operate similar to steering a car. So control is familiar and intuitive. There are a also manual and auto settings for up to 500miles of flight in between approved landing zones. The vehicle’s batteries can be charged from the engine or an electric car charging station.

Here’s a bit more from Terrafugia regarding user operation of the TF-X.

Prior to departure, the operator selects a primary target landing zone and backup landing zones. If the TF-X™ calculates insufficient energy on board to conduct last minute aborts at the first two sites and safely navigate to and land at the third within a 30 minute reserve, or if the forecast weather in any of the three landing zones would be outside the allowable limits, or if any of the selected landing zones are in temporarily restricted airspace (TFRs), departure will not be allowed until appropriate landing zones are selected.

Convenience

  • TF-X™ will carry four people in car-like comfort.
  • TF-X™ will have a non-stop flight range of at least 500 miles.
  • TF-X™ will fit into a standard construction single car garage.
  • TF-X™ will be able to takeoff vertically from a level clearing of at least 100ft in diameter.
  • TF-X™ will be able to drive on roads and highways – providing true door-to-door convenience and an automotive level of weather insensitivity.
