Changes to marriage regulations could allow for Star Wars Jedi to perform ceremonies according to the Free Church of Scotland.

The church said that the Marriage and Civil Partnership Bill would allow organizations promoting different belief systems to marry couples.

The bill isn’t entirely focused on Jedi from Star Wars though, it’s a relevant change allowing groups such as humanists to practices their beliefs. Humanists and related groups are currently classified as religious rather than non-religious according to the Scottish government.

Scottish ceremonies will still be protected with the proposed change.

Reverend Iver Martin, of the Free Church of Scotland, said that civil partnership ceremonies joined by third parties like Star Wars Jedi are astounding due to the fact that they fall into a belief category without really defining what those beliefs are.

There are loads of people in a diverse society like this for whom belief can mean virtually anything – the Flat Earth Society and Jedi Knights Society – who knows … I am not saying that we don’t give place to that kind of personal belief, but when you start making allowances for marriages to be performed within those categories then you are all over the place.

Star Wars Jedi

Public consultation is being held by the government on the bill which would allow groups like the Star Wars Jedi to perform marriage ceremonies.

A government spokeswoman said,

Our current consultation covers not only the introduction of same sex marriage but also the detail of important protections in relation to religious bodies and celebrants, freedom of speech and education … As part of the consultation we have outlined the reason for suggesting a third type of ceremony … At the moment, marriage ceremonies by bodies such as humanists have been classed as religious, even though the beliefs of such [organizations] are non-religious.

The bill clearly shows the government’s determination to uphold the reputation of traditional Scottish marriage ceremonies.

The spokeswoman also said that the government is considering a series of introductory tests that new belief systems would have to meet prior to authorization of marriage solemnization.

Star Wars Jedi knights are iconic figures from George Lucas’ world-renowned series.

There are currently various organizations that promote interest in the Jedi including, the Jedi Knight Society and Temple of the Jedi Order.

Jediism is the Jedi religion focused around the belief in The Force from Star Wars. Temple of the Jedi Order, the first international church centered around Jediism, was founded in 2005 and offers members the option of becoming a Jedi and Jedi Minister. Members can also earn a degree in Jediism.

So what are your thoughts? Should the government cater to the Star Wars Jedi religion in the same way it does with traditional religions?
