This is what the world’s first “unassisted” backflip looks like…in a car.

Using a a heavily modified Cooper Countryman, MINI teamed up with French rally driver Chicherit to flip the vehicle off a static ramp in the French ski resort Tignes.

That being said, cars have been flipped off ramps before, but generally at the aid of moving ramp parts that help increase the vehicle’s rotational movement.  MINI’s Cooper Countryman backflip simply depended on a version of the car that had enough power to accelerate the vehicle to the required speed, and a loose enough suspension to manage the impact.

As you can see in the above video the Cooper Countryman doesn’t hit square on the follow up ramp, but still manages to stick the landing.
