Aside from that fact that Kyocera’s Torque phone ships with an old iteration of the Android OS – 4.1 (Ice Cream Sandwich) – it looks to be a solid phone, literally speaking.
The Torque, as the name slightly suggests, is designed to take a serious beating thanks to its military spec rating. We’re talking dust, solar radiation, rain, drops, water submersion (up to 1-meter for 30 minutes), low pressure, salt fog (can you say RUST), and serious temperature fluctuations. I wonder if it can take a small-caliber bullet? If you’re interested, that all backs into an official Military Spec rating of 810G.
Of the more unique features, Kyocera has also included a tech called Smart Sonic Receiver that transmits sound as vibrations, kind of like a bone conducting speaker. The benefit? In the loudest of environments – think construction zone – you’ll still be able to hear your caller. And speaking of construction, the Torque ships with Sprint’s Push to Talk service so you can get your slightly antiquated walkie-talkie on.
Other features include a 1.2GHz MSM8960 Dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon, 1GB of RAM, a micro SD card slot with support for up to 32GB, 2,500mAh battery, a 5-megapixel camera (1.3MP front facing), Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi b/g/n, dual loudspeakers, 4G connectivity with Hotspot functionality, NFC, and a 4-inch WVGA 480×800 touchscreen. It measures 4.44 x 2.38 x 0.56 inches and supposedly has an 18 hour talk time according to Sprint.
The Kyocera Torque is backed by Bear Grylls, Everest mountaineer, former British Special Forces, star of television’s “Man vs. Wild,” and the father of three active boys. As you can imagine, his phones see a fair bit of action, so who better to endorse the model.
The Torque goes on sale March 8th for $99.99 with a 2-year contract at Sprint retail locations and online.
Grew up back East, got sick of the cold and headed West. Since I was small I have been pushing buttons - both electronic and human. With an insatiable need for tech I thought "why not start a blog focusing on technology, and use my dislikes and likes to post on gadgets."
