Boarder Kontrol System Snowboard Handbrake Slows Beginners (video)
I tried to snowboard once. 90% of my time on the hill was spent on my ass, and as a result I gave up, packed it in, and went home. I’ve stuck with skiing since, which isn’t saying much. If only I had this handy learning board, the Boarder Kontrol system.
Traditional snowboards are simply a board and bindings. You get on, and using the inertia created from the downhill, you slide forward. But once you get going there is no way for a newbie to stop – experienced boarders shred left to right, much like you would on a skateboard or a pair of skis to slow down.
The Boarder Kontrol system is effectively a brake that is activated by the rider who tugs on a leash. When pulled, the brake, a curved metal plate, digs into the snow, sort of like a rudder, and can assist in not only slowing the rider down but in the turns thanks to its shape. When the rider is comfortable enough, the leash can be removed and the Boarder Kontrol can be used as a normal snowboard.
Needless to say, the Boarder Kontrol system is designed for beginners, and probably only has a place on the bunny hill. Since most aspiring snowboarders will probably advance rather rapidly beyond using a brake, odds are we’ll only see the Boarder Kontrol as a ski resort rental.
