There are a gazillion, or so it would seem, portable Bluetooth speakers on the market. However, they’re all fairly costly and generally do just one thing: playback audio from a connected smartphone or tablet. As a result, I find it difficult to justify the usually $100+ price tag and just as soon opt for listening to music via the device’s built-in speaker.
JBL’s Charge speaker costs $149 and not only does it play back music via a Bluetooth connected device, but can charge any 5V product thanks to a built-in 6,000 mAh battery. On a single charge the JBL Charge can playback music for up to 12-hours, though if you decide to charge your iPhone or Android device, that time will be reduced according to how large the connected product’s battery is.
Speaker wise you’re looking at a dedicated bass port, and two 41 mm full range drivers powered by 10 watts of juice. However, without a hands-on listen that really doesn’t mean a whole lot. Nevertheless, the battery back up nature of the JBL Charge makes it a relatively easy decision, as you could spend twice that on both a battery and speaker, easily.
The JBL Charge is available now in black, green, or blue.
Grew up back East, got sick of the cold and headed West. Since I was small I have been pushing buttons - both electronic and human. With an insatiable need for tech I thought "why not start a blog focusing on technology, and use my dislikes and likes to post on gadgets."
