Canon MREAL Mixed Reality Headset
Canon’s Mixed Reality MREAL headset will be hitting retailers on March 1, 2013 for the pretty steep price of $125,000. The MREAL System for Mixed Reality generates video of one’s surroundings using a pair of cameras positioned in front of the user’s eyes, which is then combined with computer-generated graphics. What results from those cameras is then displayed on a pair of small monitors “to create high-impact, three-dimensional images.” Targeted audiences for the pretty expensive headsets are automotive designers, manufacturers, university researchers and museum exhibit curators, with Canon looking to open it up to SDK developers, which will only increase applications of use in the future. But not only will it initially cost $125,000, but it will have a $25,000 annual maintenance fee.
