The famous hoverboard scene from 1989′s movie blockbuster, Back to the Future Part II inspired my buddies and I to etch countless drawings of future cars, boats and hoverboards. ┬áNeedless to say we, in all our adolescent fervor, fell short of beating Tony Hawk at his own game. But now is the time of smartphones, smarthomes and other seemingly autonomous tech. Has technology progressed enough to grant us the magic of Hollywood for us to manipulate as we see fit? Yes and no.

Dream Scheme Studios, a visual effects studio in beautiful Denver Colorado, has crafted an immaculate replica of the “Pit Bull” rocket-propelled hoverboard from the Back to the Future 2. It even features the hook-on tow clamps that Griff used to pull his other fellow hoverboard-riding gang members in pursuit of a terrified and temporally confused Marty McFly.

This board and all the other fine hoverboard replicas from Dream Scheme are carefully crafted with incredible attention to detail. I’ve embedded a video that outlines the process. The end result is movie-perfect, except it’s only a replica and will not “hover” to keep you aloft. But damn it looks sweet.

But again, the future is now and science never rests. Time travel may be just beyond our reach. But “Quantum Locking” is an advanced technology process that we can presently and quite literally get under our feet. It uses superconducting levitation and cooled nitrogen to “lock” and levitate an object in 3-dimensional space. Support is strong enough to keep a full-grown adult male aloft. The first super conducting skateboard has been built. But sadly travel distance is only 5-meters. While it doesn’t look anywhere near as sleek or cool as Griff’s Pit Bull rocket-propelled hoverboard, it is a very early rough, but working version. Right now the board only hovers on a special rail. But it works! Take that, McFly!
