I could probably think of more than 100 things to spend $500 on. And all of those things would probably be money better spent than on this HAL 9000 Life-Size Replica. However, if you’re a die-hard Kubrick fan, and/or simply can’t get enough of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” then you’d probably care to argue my point.
According to ThinkGeek this is the “most movie-accurate HAL 9000 replica ever made.” So accurate, that they actually dug up the movie props original blueprints, allowing them to lay claim to “exact perfection.” But, that Nikkor lens that appeared in the film is no more. For that would present another added cost. An added cost that would push the already exorbitantly priced replica beyond acceptability. So replacing the Nikkor lens is a custom-ground replica fisheye accompanied by a sticker that reads “Nikkor”. And as you’ve probably guessed, the system is replete with a glowing red LED eye, which breathed life into the AI life force.
And what kind of Hal 9000 replica would it be if it couldn’t talk. Included are 15 movie-accurate phrases. To elicit one of them you just need speak to Hal for more than 1.2 seconds, rotate the ring around the lens, or point an IR based remote control in his direction. The entire thing is machined from 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum, while the black components are anodized for longevity and aesthetics.
The Hal 9000 from ThinkGeek will ship sometime starting tomorrow.
