Update: And there it is. Google just announced Google Maps for the iPhone…running iOS 6 of course. As presumed, the new Google Maps for iPhone delivers turn-by-turn voice directions, public transit info (New York and Frisco folks will be dancing in the streets tonight), street view, and all the same great features you’ve come to know and love about Google Maps. And best of all Google Maps for the iPhone is available in the app store right now!
Apple’s much maligned native Map app might soon face stiff competition as soon as tonight. AllThingsD is reporting that Google will finally release their Navigation App, or perhaps just a new Map App, into the Apple App Store.
If you recall, we reported in mid November that Google was testing a turn-by-turn map app for iOS 6. In fact, word had emerged that they had even submitted it to the Apple app store for approval and had begun testing it with some Google employees. Unfortunately, not much more was, or is known than that. But safe to assume Google’s new map app will include turn-by-turn directions, as well as public transit info – the lack of the latter feature in Apple’s Map App is why many folks decided to hold off on installing the latest version of iOS.
I’ll keep an eye out tonight, and will be sure to update this post if I see it emerge in the app store.
