We had sort of hoped that Passbook would be the physical gift and loyalty card resolve we had been searching for all of our digital lives.  And while that might eventually be the case, the iOS 6 feature is rather luck luster as the apps usability is largely dependent on brands, stores, and developers, who haven’t exactly been expeditious in producing their apps accordingly.  So for now we’re largely relegated to Target and Starbucks, with the latter one not really working all that well for us.

That in mind we were surprised that Apple didn’t launch their physical gift card option with iOS 6, but trust us, weirder things have happened.  But no more.  As of November 7th Apple Store gift cards are now compatible with Passbook.  So now you can ditch the physical gift card and integrate it directly into your iPhone.   You can also send the cards via email, provided of course the recipient has a compatible iPhone.  Gift card colors are still an option, as are the physical versions of the cards, but we’ll gladly opt for the electronic version in favor of slimming down our wallet.

We’re hearing that the gift cards can range in value from $20 to $2,000, enough to buy a new iPhone case or a new laptop.  And unlike traditional gift cards, you can tag these with a zip code where upon Passbook will send you a notification that you’ve got Apple moolah to burn if a store is within proximity.
