Nexus 10: Google’s 10-inch Tablet Slayer
Today, Google unveiled their Nexus 10, a 10-inch tablet designed to compete with Apple’s iPad 4. It’s cheaper than the iPad 4, more powerful, has a better display, and is made by Samsung, Apple’s other arch enemy. The timing is very interesting, especially seeing as Apple just announced the iPad Mini, a 7.9-inch tablet gunning for the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire HD‘s lunch. We may never be able to determine a “winner” of the smartphone/tablet war, but the Nexus 10 is very important and powerful weapon in Google’s ever growing arsenal.
Apple’s tablet has long been regarded as the tablet to own thanks to the smooth OS and now even sharper, retina display, as found in the iPad 4. However, Google just played a serious trump card by including a 2560×1600 display with 300 pixels per inch – that’s 36 better than Apple’s, though it’s important to keep in mind the Nexus 10′s display is bigger and the difference will probably be imperceivable to the commoner.
Displays aside, the Nexus 10 rocks 2GB of RAM, a dual-core 1.7GHz Samsung Exynos processor with a quad-core GPU, and MIMO WiFi (as found in the new Kindle Fire HDs). It should make everything ultra zippy and possibly might leave the iPad 4 in the dust, but until we score some benchmarks, we’re gonna leave that one as TBD. Battery life is a purported 9 hours, though your mileage will vary with what you’re doing; video vs web surfing. A 5-megapixel camera captures full HD video, while a front facing 1.9MP should make HD video conferencing possible. Stereo speakers, micro-USB, micro-HDMI, Miracast support (for Airplay like streaming), , microphone, gyro, accelerometer, compass, ambient light sensor, barometer, and Android 4.2 complete the Nexus 10′s package.
The Nexus 10 will come in two flavors; 16GB and 32GB. Pricing starts at $399 – tack on $100 for the 32GB model. No word on 3G or LTE connectivity, but seeing as they’re specifying “WiFi only”, and to remain competitive, it’s inevitable they’ll release a cellular model, at premium no less. Expect it to go on sale November 11th.
