The Oculus Rift Kickstarter project is supposed to be the first “truly immersive virtual reality headset” for gamers that allows you to really be absorbed in your overall gaming experience. It features a wide field of view, high-resolution display, and ultra-low latency head tracking, which is all supposed to combine so that your gaming experience is taken to new heights.
The project is meant to raise money to build development kits so that they can get into the hands of developers faster, thus allowing 3D gaming to be cheaper and widely available since current products are either way too expensive or reserved for the military or scientific community. The Rift is supposed to change all that, designed to maximize immersion, comfort, and pure, uninhibited fun, at a price everyone can afford.
Currently, DOOM3 BFG edition is the first Oculus-ready game and will come with every Rift kit on Kickstarter. But even though the consumer version of the Rift is still a ways down the road, the early developer kit’s hardware design is cutting edge, with technical specifications above and beyond other consumer headset available today.
