Memorial is usually the first holiday before summer, giving many a welcomed three-day weekend. But few really know what the holiday is about. The federal holiday observed annually in the United States on the last Monday of May originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. But it has now evolved to be a day of remembering those who have died in military service.
