With its eye toward the future of mobility, BMW i has unveiled its third concept with the i8 Spyder that builds upon the i8 coupe that debuted last year. While still a concept it does appear to have features that bring it closer to production models that will eventually go on sale in the future. The plug-in model features a 131-hp electric motor that powers the front axle with a mid-mounted turbocharged three-cylinder 223-hp gas engine powering the rear. There’s a pack of lithium-ion batteries that are centrally located between the two power sources, which all of it together producing a total system output of 354 ponies and 405 lb.-ft. of toque. Performance figures include a 0-62 mph time of five seconds and a top speed of 155 mph.
It’s said to travel about 19 miles on electricity alone before the gas engine turns on to recharge the batteries. BMW also mentions that it’s capable of 94 miles per gallon on the Imperial cycle (which converts to about 78 miles per gallon on our EPA cycle). Another cool features is that its drivetrain can be front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive depending on whether efficiency, performance or all-weather traction is called for. The exterior is pretty close to that of the coupe except for a few minor tweaks to allow for the convertible design (like the two-section folding roof). There’s also a pair of electric scooters underneath a glass panel in the rear.
