Infiltrating an enemy base takes not only balls the size of boulders, but a healthy dose of recon. And while the military often depends on helicopter, snipers and drones to obtain that info, it’s doesn’t always provide the up close video and photos that are needed to asses the true threat level.
That’s when they send in the Sand Flea. In effect it’s an RC car that is outfitted with what appears to be set of rollerblade wheels and a no frills chassis. But don’t be fooled by the Sand Flea’s unassuming appearance. It can jump a whopping 30-feet into the air, allowing it to hop to the roof of a small building or descend a level down – most RC cars get stuck at anything that isn’t a ramp. Onboard is a video camera that boasts a stabilization system that maintains its orientation and thus improves the video capture.
This is the second iteration of the Sand Flea and is being developed by Boston Dynamics for the US Army. So, no dice if you were hoping to buy one, but perhaps they’ll create a water downed, commercialized version.
Grew up back East, got sick of the cold and headed West. Since I was small I have been pushing buttons - both electronic and human. With an insatiable need for tech I thought "why not start a blog focusing on technology, and use my dislikes and likes to post on gadgets."
