Back in 2008 Logitech scooped up Ultimate Ears for a cool $34 million. At this point there is no telling if the purchase paid off, but today we’re seeing what we believe to be the first Ultimate Ears Airplay enabled speaker from the company, the Logitech UE Air Speaker.
Logitech hasn’t said exactly what’s hidden behind the speakers black mesh grill, but we do know that they’ve streamlined the setup process, which in turn should allow any Dick, Jane or Harry to pair it to their home’s WiFi network for Airplay playback. You simply download the accompanying UE Airplay app, dock any iOS device that is already connected to the network, enter your router’s WEP password and you’ll be set to stream uncompressed audio from any Airplay enabled device. Simple enough.
Despite not knowing much about the woofer and tweeter setup of this box, aesthetically it does look rather pleasing thanks to the hidden slide out drawer and curved body with a piano black finish. There also appears to be few physical disc style buttons built into the top of the speaker, which probably control power, volume and input (we’re hearing there is also a 3.5mm jack on the back). However, at $400 we are a bit cautious to give the Logitech UE Air Speaker a green light in the buy department, that is until we get our hands on it.
