Railguns have long been met with skepticism.  Back in the 80s Reagan called for a real deal Star Wars defense system that included a gun of such ilk.  Unfortunately, he never lived to see the tech materialize, which today finally became more of a reality.

The above footage is from the BAE, a British company that builds naval hardware.  Loaded inside the 12-meter barrel is an aluminum projectile that is propelled from the cannon using one million amps of juice towards its target.  The explosion you’ll bear witness to is from the ampage flowing through the gun’s massive barrel combined with the hypersonic speed of the bullet.

When the Navy adopts the technology – testing will occur for another 5 years – the aim (pardon the pun) of the railgun is to fire multiple projectiles miles across the ocean’s surface without draining the power of the battle ship.  For the sake of awe, testing was completed with a similar tech in 2010 that achieved a world record; a 23-pound bullet fired 5500 feet in one second.
