Discovery Bay Games tried their hand at a bare bones version of the iCade.  Needless to say it fell short in not only design, but nostalgia.  We shouldn’t knock them for trying, though, since the iCade isn’t exactly bag friendly, and is more or less built to sit in the corner of your living room for when you’re nephews and nieces stop by for a visit.

Well, iCade apparently couldn’t take this news laying down and kicked out their own somewhat portable version of the iCade, the iCade Core.  The name pretty much sums up what the device has to offer, which is the same arcade like joystick and buttons found in the original iCade.  In fact, it’s pretty much the same thing as the iCade, minus the colorful, retro styled box that housed the iPad.  Connectivity also remains the same, which comes by way of Blueooth, though this version you can lay your iPad in landscape mode, ideal if you want to watch a movie.  Finally, a pass through slot lets you charge the Apple tablet using any 30-pin sync cable.

ION hasn’t said when it will go on sale or for how much, but we figure it’s gotta be cheaper than the original iCade, which cost $100.
