Product Snapshot

Overview

Launched in 2019, the Linksys Atlas Pro 6 MX5503 is a premium dual-band mesh WiFi 6 router that accommodates 2.4GHz and 5GHz bandwidths, has five internal antennas, and comes in one-, two-, or three-pack options. Like the best router, its bandwidth goes up to 5.4Gbps, and it covers 8,100 square feet with the three-pack option.

Supporting Wi-Fi 6, ethernet backhaul, and MU-MIMO, this router has a 160ms latency and houses 1 Gigabit Ethernet (WAN) and 3 LAN ports. Lastly, security measures include VPN, WPA2, and WPA3, and the mobile app has auto firmware updates, parental controls, and two-step verification.

Consensus

our Verdict

With a throughput of 105Mbps over 2.4GHz and 398Mbps over 5GHz and a wide coverage of 48.77 meters, the Linksys Atlas Pro 6 MX5503 is suitable for large, low to moderately data-hungry homes. It provides a low-latency solution for 4K streaming and gaming, but modest download speeds of 76Mbps (2.4GHz) and 350Mbps (5GHz) place it in the bottom third of our certified tested routers. (The Synology WRX560 gets 120 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 640 Mbps on 5GHz)

Setting up through the Linksys Smart WiFi app is simple as it details step-by-step instructions, but there is no option to set up through a computer/web browser. The dual-band WiFi can’t accommodate too many devices guzzling data simultaneously but provides fast performance for home use. The signal majorly drops over the 2.4GHz bandwidth when walls or ceilings block the way.

Reason to Buy

  • Adequately speedy Wi-Fi
    • Designed for low and moderately intensive data demands in spacious homes, the Linksys Atlas Pro 6 MX5503 delivers good performance for competitive gaming and 4K and VR streaming across limited devices.

    • Its dual-band network achieves a throughput of 105Mbps over 2.4GHz and 398Mbps over 5GHz, guaranteeing a reliable and secure connection. For a faster 60GHz channel, check our Netgear Nighthawk XR500 review.

  • Fairly wide range
    • Its 48.77-meter range puts it in the top half of our certified, tested routers since it provides expansive coverage for spacious four to five-bedroom homes. For 9000 square feet of coverage, read our Netgear Orbi RBKE963 review.

  • Easy setup
    • You can download the user-friendly Linksys Smart WiFi app, which gives step-by-step instructions for setup. But there is no option to set up through the web browser.

Reason to Avoid

  • Slightly slow download
    • Although its modest download speeds of 76Mbps (2.4GHz) and 350Mbps (5GHz) position this router in the lower third of our verified tested routers, it will be sufficient for most streaming and gaming tasks, but too many devices on the network make it slow.

  • Mediocre WiFi strength over 2.4GHz
    • WiFi signal strength weakens drastically when passing through walls and ceilings, especially over 2.4GHz.

The Linksys Atlas Pro 6 MX5503 attains a maximum bandwidth of 600Mbps over 2.4GHz and 4,800Mbps over a 5GHz network, promising minimal congestion. It has greater bandwidth over the 5GHz (4,800Mbps) than the Linksys Hydra Pro 6E (1,200Mbps), but the Atlas Pro 6E has an additional 6GHz band (4,800 Mbps) for more bandwidth overall. The Hydra Pro 6E reaches a throughput of 750Mbps over the 5GHz bandwidth, while the Atlas Pro 6 MX5503’s 5GHz throughput is just 398Mbps.

The Netgear Nighthawk RAXE300 has faster download speeds of 316Mbps over 2.4GHz and 946.9Mbps over 5GHz for superior VR streaming and online gaming than the Linksys Atlas Pro 6 MX5503’s modest 76Mbps (2.4 GHz) and 350Mbps (5GHz) download speeds. Both routers are ideal for large homes, given their expansive coverage of 48.77 meters (Atlas Pro 6) and 51.8 meters (RAXE300). That said, the RAXE300 has three frequency bands (2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz) for managing more devices simultaneously and offering faster speeds, while the Atlas Pro 6 MX5503 is limited to just two (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz). For more information, read our Netgear Nighthawk RAXE300 review.

The Linksys Atlas Pro 6 MX5503 outclasses the Google Nest Wi-Fi in terms of greater wired connectivity with 1 x WAN and 3 x LAN ports, while the latter offers only 1 x WAN and 1 x LAN port. The Atlas Pro 6 also boasts a generous range of 48.77 meters, suitable for larger three- to four-bedroom homes. In contrast, the Google Nest Wi-Fi has a lower 30.48-meter range apt for small to mid-sized homes. For an in-depth review, find our Google Nest Wi-Fi review here.
