Apple’s iPad is great for directly consuming movies, music and TV shows. But don’t overlook the fact that it can play an excellent second fiddle to your other digital media boxes. Case in point is DirectTV’s iPad app which is now available in the iTunes store for free.  So what makes it special?

Well, for one it can act as a glorified remote control for changing channels and other functions.  But that’s the least of its wizardry.  The app lets you browse through movies and TV shows without interrupting the show you are currently watching as well as set recordings and view your DVR’s content.   You can also set favorite channels by icon, setup dedicated tabs with playlists, view content by receiver, view show descriptions (cast, photos, etc), view current sport match ups and scores and more.

The app is available in the iTunes store now, but you’ll need to own a DIRECTV PLUS DVR (models R15, R16, R22), DIRECTV PLUS HD DVR (models HR20, HR21, HR22, HR23, HR24) or TiVo® Series 2 receivers with 6.4a software.
