The iPad is great for many a thing, but one growing frustration I’ve had is the case. Apple’s iPad Case has thus far been the best that I’ve used, but it moves, sometimes plugs don’t fit properly, it can’t sit up straight…it ain’t perfect. I have no doubt that I’ll spot tens, if not hundreds of cases, docks, and all sorts of iAccessories, but Joby’s is one that is definitely worth mentioning.

Joby – who is quickly becoming a household name with their Gorilla line of products for cameras and cellphones – is using both the same technology, and some newer hardware, to spruce up the iPad. The Yogi (or Yogi for iPad as it’s formally titled) is just like most of Joby’s other Gorilla products. It uses an adjustable stand and has a case that wraps around the iPad to keep it secure. It can sit flat on a desk or be tied around a pole, in any way you want. And it’s available now for $49.95.

Then there’s the big kahuna (mind the Hawaii speak, a recent vacation with President Obama and Rush Limbaugh is still awfully fresh), the Ori. The GorillaMobile Ori is a iPad case that also acts as a stand, protecting the iPad while making it easy to carry around and convenient for watching a movie or typing. The idea is more than solid: iPad owners have long been troubled by the desire to type but the inability to do so comfortably.

The Ori is also available now for $79.95. I don’t know how fond I am of the design…it’s certainly light enough, but it’s also thicker and more square, and larger all around. I’d need it in the lab to know for sure. The aluminum and polypropylene did feel comfortable in the hand. We shall see soon enough.

James Pikover

Spawned in the horrendous heat of a Los Angeles winter, James was born with an incessant need to press buttons. Whether it was the car radio, doorbells on Halloween or lights, James pushed, pressed and prodded every button. No elevator was left unscathed, no building intercom was left un-rung, and no person he’s known has been left un-annoyed.
