iRobot 710 Warrior Bot Cleans Roads With Grenades (video)

iRobot’s bots clear gutters and remove debris from floors.  So it might come as a surprise to hear that they’ve been working on another breed of robots that can clear a road chalk full of mines.

The 710 Warrior machine is an APOBS (Anti-Personnel Obstacle Breaching System) that fires a rocket down a road carrying behind it a rope of grenades.  Upon explosion, which happens remotely via a human finger, it is designed to detonate up to 45 square meters of mines.  It’s a sort of ground fired carpet bomb system.

Due to public fear and safety concerns the bots never made it to the battlefield.  That’s odd, because the last time I checked UAVs weren’t exactly the most palatable form of warfare.
