Google VP product management Sundar Pichai revealed today that Chrome, Google’s open-source OS, will be hitting X86 and ARM notebooks this fall. Chrome is a free cloud-centered OS based on Ubuntu Linux and features an interface similar to the Chrome browser.

I think there’s going to be some interesting ripples through the notebook industry with its release — mainstream consumers have been wary of Linux distributions instead of Windows in the past, but Google is well-known enough in non-tech circles that Chrome could be widely adopted easily. If not paying for Windows knocks a hundred dollars off a notebook’s price, consumers might choose with their wallets. We’ll have to wait until the fall to find out.
